HBO Max‘s Harry Potter TV series will be “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period,” Warner Bros. Discovery‘s streaming chief said today in London.

J.B. Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at WBD, waxed lyrically about the series, which will star Dominic McLaughlin as child wizard Harry Potter at an event announcing the launch date of HBO Max in the UK and Ireland.

“[Harry Potter] producer David Heyman will tell you the scope of the production, the detail, the meticulousness of what they are going through and what they are building,” said Perrette. “It takes theatrical to a whole different level.

“In the series you can go deeper, and tell more of the pieces that you didn’t capture in a two-hour movie. Casey [Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content] doesn’t like me saying this, but I really think this is the streaming event of the decade.”

Anticipation over the series, which will retell JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter novel series’ as a multi-season television drama, has been significant ever since it was announced back in April 2023.

HBO Max is set to launch in the UK and Ireland on March 26, completing the streaming service’s rollout in Europe. The Harry Potter series – which comes from Warner Bros. Television, HBO Entertainment, Brontë Film & TV and Heyday Films – is set to launch next year and will undoubtably be among the most significant series debuts on 2027 around the world.

“The team have been waiting for so long to deliver this in a market as big as important as the UK, said Perrett adding it would be “the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It’s number one, two and three in many ways.”

Child actor McLaughlin will star in the show alongside Alastair Stout, who will play Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton, who will be Hermione Granger. The likes of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paada Essiedu and Nick Frost will also have significant roles.

The original film series made stars of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, and grossed billions of dollars at the box office for Warners.
