Harry Potter Star Officially Returning for New Project

For an entire generation, it’s difficult to imagine Ron Weasley being played by anyone other than Rupert Grint. The actor was only 11 when he was cast alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, before growing up on screen across all eight movies in the Wizarding World saga. It’s now been 15 years since audiences last saw Grint as Ron in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, but that’s finally about to change.

Rupert Grint is officially returning as Ron Weasley in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, marking his first performance as the character since the original Harry Potter film series concluded in 2011. Grint will begin performances at New York’s Lyric Theatre on February 2, 2027, for a strictly limited 17-week engagement running through May 30.

The return gives Grint the opportunity to play Ron at an entirely different point in the character’s life. Cursed Child takes place 19 years after the events of the original story, with Ron now grown up, married to Hermione Granger and raising a family of his own. Grint, now 38, highlighted the parallels between himself and the character in a statement announcing his return:

“I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new.”

Tom Felton’s ‘Harry Potter’ Return Has Been a Massive Broadway Hit

Grint will become only the second actor from the original Harry Potter movies to reprise his character in Cursed Child. The first was Tom Felton, whose return as Draco Malfoy in November 2025 proved that audiences are extremely interested in seeing the movie’s original stars return to the Wizarding World.

The impact on the Broadway production was almost immediate. During the ten weeks before Felton’s arrival, Cursed Child averaged approximately $1.07 million per week and played to around 84% capacity. His first full week generated a staggering $2.97 million, selling every available seat, while top ticket prices soared as high as $900.

Things got even bigger over Christmas. During the week ending December 28, 2025, Cursed Child grossed $3.71 million across nine performances, setting a new weekly record for the production at the Lyric Theatre. Eight of its ten highest-grossing Broadway weeks have now occurred since Felton joined the cast.
