Christmas 2026 is going to be more magical than usual when HBO drops the first episode of its upcoming Harry Potter TV series. The movies did an incredible job of capturing the spirit of the books, but many changes were made, and several important storylines from the Harry Potter books were cut.
The first two books are the shortest and simplest, written as an introduction to the world and the characters for young children. Consequently, the Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets movies are considered to be the most faithful, straightforward adaptations. Each season of the TV show is expected to cover one book in the series.
Later seasons of the TV show will need every minute to bring the full story to the screen, but the earlier seasons will have the opportunity to expand on the books. The trailer for Harry Potter season 1 depicts Harry’s unexplained magical abilities before he enters Hogwarts in a more immersive way than the books.
In the books, when Hagrid tells Harry he is a wizard, he has brief memories of times when his magic helped him subconsciously. They're written as mere sentence fragments in Harry’s inner monologue — like Petunia giving him an unflattering haircut, or bullies at his Muggle school targeting him.
The trailer confirms we are going to see these moments as complete scenes. Hopefully the scenes will be shown in full, not as flashbacks, but as breadcrumbs of Harry Potter’s magical potential even before his Hogwarts letter arrives. Even if Harry doesn’t cast a single spell in Sorcerer's Stone, the Dursleys can’t suppress his innate magic.
Harry Potter And Voldemort Had Opposite Reactions To Learning About Their Magic
MovieStillsDBHarry and Voldemort are mirrors of each other. Both boys grow up as lonely orphans in the Muggle world, both display accidental magic before understanding what it is, and both are told by Hogwarts staff that they are wizards. Yet their reactions immediately reveal the qualities that will define their lives.
When Hagrid tells Harry the truth in Sorcerer's Stone, the Boy Wizard is overwhelmed and skeptical. Learning that he is famous only confuses him further, and he insists there must have been a mistake.
After Hagrid asks whether strange things ever happened when he was angry or frightened, Harry recalls moments like his hair growing back overnight after Aunt Petunia's disastrous haircut and mysteriously ending up on a school roof while fleeing bullies. Even after everything Hagrid tells him the truth, Harry wakes the next morning convinced it was all a dream.
Hagrid looked at Harry with warmth and respect blazing in his eyes, but Harry, instead of feeling pleased and proud, felt quite sure there had been a horrible mistake. A wizard? Him? How could he possibly be? ...
"Hagrid," he said quietly, "I think you must have made a horrible mistake, I don't think I can be a wizard."
To his surprise, Hagrid chuckled. (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Chapter 4, "The Keeper of the Keys")
"Magic?" [Tom Riddle] repeated in a whisper. "... It's magic, what I do? ... I knew I was different. I knew I was special. Always, I knew there was something." (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Chapter 13, "The Secret Riddle")
Rather than assuming he deserves a place in the magical world, Harry is simply grateful to discover he belongs somewhere. The Pensieve memories Dumbledore shares in Half-Blood Prince present the opposite reaction from Tom Riddle.
Tom Riddle, the child who would become Lord Voldemort, is not surprised to learn he is a wizard because he already believes he is exceptional. He eagerly boasts about the abilities he has discovered on his own, proudly explaining that he can hurt people and speak to snakes.
He even refuses Dumbledore's offer to accompany him to Diagon Alley, preferring to rely only on himself. Harry immediately places his trust in Hagrid, beginning one of the series' most enduring friendships, while Tom chooses isolation from the very start. That single difference foreshadows everything that follows, including how each boy ultimately chooses to use his extraordinary power.
The Dursleys Can Be More Consistent In A Harry Potter TV Series
If the official Harry Potter season 1 teaser trailer is any indication, HBO understands how important Harry's life with the Dursleys is to the story. Roughly 30 seconds of the two-minute trailer are devoted to Privet Drive and Harry's life before Hogwarts, including moments that were never shown in the movies.
The movies gradually reduced the Dursleys' role as the series expanded. As the books grew longer and the magical world became more complex, the movies understandably prioritized the wizarding world. The Dursleys were omitted entirely from Goblet of Fire, while several of their most important moments in Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows were either shortened or removed altogether.
As a result, Petunia and Dudley lost much of the nuance that made them compelling in the books. Petunia, in particular, is more than Harry's cruel aunt. The books reveal her lingering resentment toward Lily, her knowledge of the Dementors, and her childhood correspondence with Dumbledore after she begged him to let her attend Hogwarts.
The HBO Harry Potter series has the chance to change Petunia Dursley from a one-note antagonist into someone whose bitterness stems from lifelong jealousy and heartbreak. Dudley also receives a more gradual redemption. Dudley's farewell to Harry in the Deathly Hallows Part 1 movie is unearned compared to his subtler but more meaningful goodbye in the book.
The Dursleys also serve another important purpose: they demonstrate that Voldemort's return affects more than just witches and wizards. Their fear, displacement, and eventual flight into hiding remind readers that the conflict spills into the Muggle world as well, making the Harry Potter TV show feel much larger than the walls of Hogwarts.
