Hannah Kobayashi Found Safe After Leaving U.S. for Mexico
Hannah Kobayashi’s mystifying missing person case has come to a close.
A month after the Hawaiian woman’s family reported her missing in Los Angeles after a planned trip to New York went awry, her family confirms they have made contact with her.
“We are incredibly relieved and grateful that Hannah has been found safe,” Hannah’s sister Sydni Kobayashi and mom Brandi Yee said in a statement to NBC News. “This past month has been an unimaginable ordeal for our family, and we kindly ask for privacy as we take the time to heal and process everything we have been through.”
The update from her family comes just one week after the Los Angeles Police Department declared the 31-year-old a “voluntarily missing” person.
“We want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported us during this difficult time,” the family’s statement concluded. “Your kindness and concern have meant the world to us.”
After authorities concluded that Hannah—who first lost contact with her family early last month after she missed a connecting flight from Los Angeles to New York—was reported as “fine” by the LAPD Dec. 2 from security footage of her entering Mexico, the family expressed “frustration,” and pleaded for Hannah to make contact.
“I can't stress enough how loved you are, how supported you are," Sydni said in a message to her sister during an appearance on NBC News’ Top Story Dec. 3. “We're really worried about you. No matter what situation you're in, you always have a home to come to.”
Days later, the Kobayashi family also shut down reports that Hannah had been involved in a green card marriage scheme.

“We want to stress that the family has not publicly announced any information regarding an alleged marriage because we did not have the facts or the necessary documents to verify the legitimacy of this information,” the family’s attorney said in a Dec. 5 statement to NewsNation. “The family has not confirmed the authenticity of the images or the accuracy of the information provided about a possible secret marriage. This is one of many leads we are actively investigating with the help of our attorney and investigative team.”
Reports that Hannah has made contact with her family also come weeks after her father Ryan Kobayashiwas found dead by suicide in Los Angeles amid a 16-day search for her.
At the time, Hannah’s family issued a statement amid the tragedy, saying, “What the family needs most in this difficult time is for all communities to rally around them with support, compassion, and prayers.”
