We’re officially only a few weeks away from the release of Project Hail Mary, and the hype for the year’s first great sci-fi movie couldn’t be higher. Fans who have read the Project Hail Mary novel by Andy Weir know that they’re in for a treat, but those who are familiar with the source material know that they’re in for a treat, but those who are unfamiliar with the source material can expect one of the great sci-fi adaptations of all time. The film stars Ryan Gosling as the titular astronaut Ryland Grace, and it was directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. Drew Goddard, famous for his work adapting another of Weir’s novels, The Martian, penned the script for Project Hail Mary.

Early screenings for Project Hail Mary have been happening for a few weeks now, and the film is already receiving glowing reviews from all who have had the chance to see it a little early. This also extends past regular fans to other Hollywood creatives, who have not been shy about sharing their honest reviews of Project Hail Mary. The latest in a long line of actors and directors to share their thoughts are legendary sci-fi director Guillermo del Toro, who most recently directed the Oscar-nominated sci-fi/fantasy masterpiece, Frankenstein. Del Toro took to his personal X account to confirm that he “loved“ the movie, praising its fantastic performances and visuals, along with the exquisite directorial control. This is high praise coming from one of the best directors in Hollywood right now, and it will certainly bode well for Project Hail Mary's success in the long run.

What Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ About?

Project Hail Mary follows Ryland Grace, a brilliant scientist who gave up a promising career in academia to become a middle school teacher. He’s called back into the life he left behind when a mysterious space algae known as Astrophage begins to consume the sun’s energy, giving humanity less than 50 years to solve the problem. This might seem like a long time, until they realize the solution lies light-years away. Ryland Grace works with a talented team of scientists and astronauts on Earth before being sent to space to solve the problem firsthand. It’s not until he’s far from Earth that he discovers an alien in a similar predicament.
