Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.
It's only a matter of months until Grand Theft Auto 6 releases, but plenty of fans are still plagued by doubts about how the game will be priced. Every so often, a market analyst pops up to announce their speculation that the game might, in fact, cost $100, and it repeatedly snowballs into a major news story as people give way to doom and gloom about the alleged MSRP.
With no substantial evidence to ever support either a $100 price or a more traditional $69.99 alternative, the debate has never been able to find a resolution. Now, however, one leaker has finally answered the biggest question about the expected price.
On X, leaker DetectiveSeeds claimed to be in possession of "GTA 6 pricing, bundles, and various structures of ordering the game," but delcared that they wouldn't release the specific prices as it "could have market impacts." Surprisingly, though, the update didn't end there. In response to a reply from Annonymous asking if the price would fall in the range of $60-80, DetectiveSeeds simply said "Yes," suggesting that a $100 price point isn't on the table.
It's worth noting that DetectiveSeeds isn't a constantly reliable source, most notably due to citing an AI chatbot as a source for leaked information in the past. In this case, the source appears to be a bit less dodgy, but it's still worth taking with a grain of salt. Nonetheless, fans are feeling relieved by the update, with the commenter who posed the question saying that the price range "Sounds good."
Whether or not DetectiveSeeds' info is reliable, I'd argue that the $100 price rumor has never been substantial. While Rockstar could certainly get away with charging extra for GTA 6, there's never been any indication that the studio actually plans to, only speculation from analysts. A slightly higher price of $79.99 might still be within reason, but any copy going for $100 will likely be a special edition.
DetectiveSeeds claims that there will be six GTA 6 options for pre-order, so it's entirely possible that the most deluxe version will cost a good bit more than $100. We might not have to wait very long for all the details. Thanks to a Best Buy email that seems to have been sent out early, the current rumor mill suggests the third Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer will go live on May 18, with pre-orders opening on the same day.
