Eagle-eyed GTA 6 fans noticed that recent clips of the game show the passage of time, with six seconds in real life equaling one in-game minute. This means it would take just over two hours — 144 minutes — for a full day and night cycle to pass in GTA 6.

It's a significantly longer day/night cycle than what was present in Grand Theft Auto 5, which suggests that Rockstar has deepened GTA 6's simulation elements. A longer day requires more content to fill it. In GTA 5, the time of day dictated what could transpire around the map. In the morning, the streets of Los Santos light up with open stores and people commuting to work. During the evening, pedestrians become scarcer, but establishments like nightclubs and bars start gearing up.

Nighttime brings about more dangers, like an increased police presence and threatening animals roaming the wilds. In Red Dead Redemption 2, hunting could be impacted by the time of day, with certain animals more likely to appear during specific segments. The western also featured dynamic weather events, like thunderstorms and overcast skies. Among other things, Florida is known for its microclimates — so weather could have a more pronounced impact on GTA 6. Rockstar's gotta show off those fancy mud physics somehow!

In RDR2, story elements like interacting with Dutch's gang, ambushes, and availability of missions could be impacted by the time of day. Some particularly spooky events, like ghost sightings or stranger encounters, could only transpire during the nighttime as well. In some older GTA games, the time of day impacts vehicle spawns. GTA 5 sometimes even hid Easter eggs like the Bigfoot peyote plant at a specific period of the day, during particular weather events.

There are a couple of caveats here. The build, which does not appear to be recent, may differ from what will wind up in players' hands when Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on Nov. 19. The passage of time may also not be constant throughout GTA 6. In RDR2, specific activities like poker altered the passage of time. Some periods reportedly pass faster than others, with late morning and early afternoon lasting the longest.
