Warning! SPOILERS about Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 5 ahead.

Grey's Anatomy season 21, episode 5 put Monica and Amelia’s story right at its center after their connection seemingly fizzled out at the end of season 20, making Winston oddly have a key role in their reconciliation. First appearing as a new character in Grey’s Anatomy season 20, Monica left a lasting impression on Amelia because she confronted her for stealing her parking spot, kickstarting their antipathy for one another. However, their groundbreaking work and how they challenged each other to reach the best possible outcomes for their patients confirmed how great they were together as a team.

Their flirty banter eventually prompted Amelia to ask Monica out, or at least see whether she was open to exploring their connection, considering how obvious it was. Unfortunately, Monica exiting a difficult divorce that inspired her to move across the country from Texas to Seattle stopped any possible exploration of romance between Amelia and Monica before it could even start, dimming their spark as a result. This didn’t stop them from working together and always bringing out the best in each other, which gave them the chance to reach a more personal space in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 5.

Amelia Helping Monica Stressing Out About Schmitt & Adams Reconciled Them

While Monica and Amelia’s connection and Winston and Monica hooking up were entirely unrelated storylines, they oddly converged when Winston returned what he believed was Monica’s lingerie to her and Amelia walked in on them. The awkward encounter seemed inconsequential given the weird limbo Amelia and Monica were in in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, but knowing about Winston and Monica hooking up can inadvertently cause Monica and Amelia to grow closer. This is a consequence of Monica and Amelia’s key exchange at Grey Sloan Memorial’s helipad in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 5.

Amelia and Monica’s professional relationship only started to work after Richard Webber pointed out their similarities to Amelia, effectively making Amelia and Monica’s flirty banter possible as a result.

Amelia calming Monica down as she stressed about the radio silence from Schmitt and Adams during a storm inevitably pushed them closer because they got to know each other better. From the gratitude Monica felt because Amelia knew what to tell her to Amelia realizing even more how they would click together easily, the aftermath of Amelia supporting Monica can make them Grey’s Anatomy’s next best couple. The unavoidable closeness as a result finally let Monica come clean about her and Winston hooking up, feeling the need to explain it because she had rejected Amelia asking her out before that.

Monica Calling Out Their Connection As Casual Paves The Way For Her & Amelia

Anthony Hill as Winston Ndugu, Caterina Scorsone as Amelia Shepherd and Natalie Morales as Monica Beltran in Grey's Anatomy season 21, episode 5-1

Monica and Amelia only met in a professional capacity after Monica turned down Amelia because of her messy situation, given her divorce. However, Monica clearing up the air about what Amelia witnessed in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 5 proved her wish for Amelia to know about her being free and not romantically linked to someone else. This can make their romance much more likely in Grey’s Anatomy season 21.

Monica wanting to have a conversation to explain her and Winston’s connection, despite Amelia saying she didn’t owe her an explanation, finally makes Amelia and Monica’s relationship possible.

Because of Monica and Amelia connecting with ease, Monica and Winston’s Grey’s Anatomy season 20 romantic twist felt like a betrayal to audiences who wanted to see Amelia happy after the painful ending of her relationship with Kai. However, Winston’s appearance in Grey’s Anatomy season 21, episode 5, and the awkward encounter with Monica and Amelia actually caused something peculiar enough to warrant a conversation about it. Monica wanting to have it, despite Amelia saying she didn’t owe her an explanation, showed an opening on her side, thus finally making Amelia and Monica’s relationship in Grey’s Anatomy season 21 possible.
