Greta Gerwig is set to change the landscape of streaming platforms like Netflix if her release plan for her The Chronicles of Narnia adaptation is put into place. Netflix has always operated as a way of bringing movies directly to its audience. From its earliest inception, Netflix delivered physical hard copies of movies to its customers in an effort to make the service as convenient as possible. Then, as the internet got quicker, Netflix was able to change course and begin streaming films directly through their platform to its customers.

While this has altered tha landscape of entertainment, theaters continue to be the home of blockbuster films, and generally many of the award-winning arthouse films in circulation. Netflix has continued to push back on theaters as the primary source for good movies, and while it has had considerable success, director Greta Gerwig could be a part of making them rethink how they release big movies if her Chronicles of Narnia film has anything to do with it, considering she is currently hoping for a global IMAX release for Chronicles of Narnia.

Greta Gerwig's Narnia Movies Possible IMAX Release Is A Great Sign For The Movies

The Chronicles Of Narnia Is Desrving Of The Biggest Screen Possible

While Netflix ventured into the world of theatrical releases with films like Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, IMAX is a whole different ballgame. The ultra-high resolution medium of delivering movies on the biggest screens possible, typically several times larger than a home theater setup, demands the highest quality films. When a movie is filmed with IMAX in mind, the quality of the scenes, graphics, and visuals in general need to be spectacular. As such, it appears promising for Gerwig's Narnia movies that they would be released on IMAX, but it also means something would be lost in a streaming-only release.

4 Things Netflix’s Chronicles of Narnia Needs to Avoid

Previous Chronicles of Narnia movies have received mixed reviews, but Netflix has the opportunity to fix the trend with their upcoming TV show.

However, Greta Gerwig's star power is significant, and her ability to generate an audience has been tested and proven. If Netflix were to give a director a big budget and plan for an IMAX release, Gerwig makes sense as the person to do it. And on top of that, Narnia is a spectacular world of stories by the brilliant author C.S. Lewis that makes sense to have the stories told in the most extravagant and incredible way possible.

Gerwig's Narnia Movies Could Be Box Office Hits - If Netflix Allows It

Netflix Remains The Biggest Obstacle To A Global Release, Despite What They Could Earn At The Box Office

The fact is that streaming movies have no presence at the box office. And as soon as a movie gets put on one of these platforms, its performance at the box office plummets. When someone can view a film for free at home, as opposed to paying for a cinema ticket, snacks, and the cost of transport, they tend to choose the former. But, there is no denying that the biggest earning films at the box office make significant returns on investment, with notable new releases crossing the billion dollar threshold.

If Netflix is open to it, they could make a huge amount of money at the box office with Gerwig's Narnia movies, but the delicate balance between profitability at the box office and upsetting paying subscribers at home needs to be carefully considered. Netflix customers pay for convenience, but also access to a library of exclusive content. If the membership fee doesn't grant access to a movie that will potentially be one of Netflix's biggest to date, it could lead to disaster. On the other hand, The Chronicles of Narnia is such a huge set of stories that it almost guarantees a big box office return worthy of a global IMAX release.
