Green Lantern #19 green lanterns corps

WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for BATMAN/SUPERMAN: WORLD'S FINEST #32!Willpower is the core factor in determining a Green Lantern's power, with it typically depending solely on the Ring wielder themselves. However, DC has recently redefined what fans know about how a Green Lantern ring functions by revealing two new ways Hal Jordan has supercharged his ring with the help of other heroes.

In Mark Waid and Adrián Gutiérrez’s Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #32, the supervillain Eclipso—a god-like entity of chaos and destruction—possesses both Batman and Superman to execute his sinister plan of annihilating Earth’s population, setting the stage for a reign of terror across the universe.

To minimize interference, Eclipso traps the rest of the Justice League—Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Flash, and several others—in a massive version of one of his black diamonds. However, with Green Arrow’s help, Green Lantern manages to supercharge his ring, breaking them free from their prison.

After Doctor Fate of the Justice Society of America locates the Justice League in the Sahara Desert, the team enlists the JSA's help to free Batman and Superman from Eclipso’s control while Green Lantern Alan Scott goes to rescue the other heroes from their diamond imprisonment. Upon arrival, Alan hits the diamond prison with the full force of his ring, encouraging Hal to do the same from inside. However, it soon becomes clear that their combined willpower isn’t enough, and the diamond is trying to suck Alan into its confinement. This prompts a Hail Mary assist from Green Arrow, who taunts Hal to boost his willpower.

Seeing that Hal’s willpower isn’t strong enough to break the diamond, Oliver hurls insults at him: “Hal, come on! Is that all the willpower you have, you lightweight? You’re really going to let Eclipso win? I never took you for a quitter! What kind of man are you?” Surprisingly, these taunts do the trick, and moments later, the heroes are freed. Exhausted from his display of immense willpower, Hal makes it clear he is unimpressed with Oliver’s strategy, but Green Arrow points out that it worked, effectively ending the discussion. Thus, it seems that taunting can indeed supercharge a Green Lantern’s ring.

Green Arrow’s taunting tactic isn’t the only way a Green Lantern’s ring has recently received a boost. In Absolute Power #4, Hal holds off a multiverse's worth of villains with one of his constructs as they attempt to pour through Amanda Waller’s transmatter machine. Under the immense strain, Hal’s construct begins to crack, and he shouts that he can’t hold off the multiverse much longer due to his finite willpower. This prompts the depowered Flashes—Jay Garrick, Wally West, Max Mercury, and Bart Allen—to lend their own willpower to Hal, strengthening his construct. Thus, DC seems to be playing fast and loose with the rules of a Green Lantern’s ring, and it’s undeniably entertaining.
