The 2026 Gotham Film Awards nominations are in, setting the stage for the next phase of the movie awards season. While last year’s nominations and wins were topped by “One Battle After Another,” which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, the organization decided to show some “Tender Loving Care” to more films this time around. The new Mike Leigh film is among five nomination leaders this year, along with “All of a Sudden,” “Clarissa,” “La Gradiva,” and “The Invite.” Each scored four nominations.
The 2026 nominations also mark the return of the Gotham Audience Award after a six-year hiatus. The honor celebrates films that transcend the screen to become defining cultural moments, capturing audiences’ attention through their impact, reach, and resonance. Gotham members will vote to determine the winner, and the award will be presented to the film’s credited director(s) and producer(s). (In short, the prize indexes a film’s popularity in culture through audience response and box office.)
This year, the Gotham Audience Award nominees were curated from films submitted to The Gothams for consideration, measured by opening-weekend per-theater average against the highest-rated and most-watched films of 2026, as reported in box office tracking and on Letterboxd. Notable films not submitted for any Gotham Awards consideration include “The Odyssey” and “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.
“It’s a pleasure to announce this year’s nominees. It has been a remarkable year for film, with audiences turning out in theaters for bold, distinctive work from first-time filmmakers and established artists alike,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Gotham Film & Media Institute executive director. “This year’s nominations, alongside our Tributes and the return of the Audience Award, reflect that abundance and celebrate the creative community that has been at the heart of The Gothams for more than three decades.”
While the Gotham nominations committees are made up of clusters of critics, filmmakers, and tastemakers rather than an 11,000-member Academy, these awards often help put less publicized films onto Oscar voters’ radars. Example: Kelly O’Sullivan and Alex Thompson’s extraordinary “Mouse” in the Best Feature category, which premiered way back at the Berlin Film Festival and is primed for an awards-season relaunch.
