Google has rolled out the next iteration of its successful Nano Banana AI image model, promising that it can deliver “high-quality, photorealistic imagery.”

The upgraded features are largely taken from Nano Banana Pro, they include subject consistency of up to five characters — AI can be bad at maintaining character resemblance. It can also maintain the fidelity of 14 objects in a single workflow.

Nano Banana 2 also features “precise instruction following,” meaning the model will more strictly adhere to image prompts. The images can be rendered from 512 pixels to 4K, as well as “vibrant lighting, richer textures and sharper details” across the images it creates.

Interestingly, Google says that the model uses the company’s other flagship AI, Gemini, to pull “real-world knowledge”. Adding that it is “powered by real-time information and images from web search to more accurately render specific subjects.”

Nano Banana 2, officially known as Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, contains “robust provenance” via Google’s SnythID technology with interoperable CP2A Content Credentials.

“Our provenance tools are already making an impact,” Google writes on its blog. “Since its launch in November, our SynthID verification feature in Gemini app has been used over 20 million times across various languages, helping people identify Google AI-generated images, video and audio. We’ll soon be bringing C2PA verification to the Gemini app, too.”

Nano Banana 2 has already begun to roll out on the Gemini App, Google Search, AI Studio + API, Google Cloud, Google Flow, and on Google Ads.

When Nano Banana Pro was first launched back in November, it was noted for its added realism.

“You will be fooled by an AI photo, and you probably already have been but didn’t know it,” content creator Jeremy Carrasco said of the model.

“It is a step in realism specifically. A lot of the things that you used to look for, such as a blurry camera image or something that just looks a little too glossy or a little too smooth, a lot of that has been straightened out.”
