Google now lets users toggle off visible watermarks from AI-generated content

Google is rolling out a new Gemini setting that lets users choose whether visible watermarks appear on images, videos and music generated through its AI assistant.

The feature is rolling out over the next few days and can be controlled through a new Media Watermark option in Gemini’s settings. Users can toggle the visible watermark on or off across visual media created through Gemini Apps.

Turning off the visible watermark does not remove Google’s other provenance systems. All AI generated media created or edited through Gemini will continue to contain Google’s invisible SynthID watermark and Content Credentials based on the C2PA standard.

SynthID embeds an imperceptible signal into generated media that can be used to determine whether content was created or edited using Google’s AI models. Google has also been expanding Gemini’s ability to verify AI generated images, video and audio using SynthID and Content Credentials.

The visible watermark works differently depending on the type of media. Images receive a visible mark on newly generated content, videos display a persistent overlay and music displays the watermark through the video or visual player accompanying the track.

There are some regional restrictions. Users in India, South Korea and Vietnam can only access the watermark toggle with a Google AI Ultra subscription. Other users in those countries will continue to have visible watermarks automatically applied.

The setting is also unavailable for users accessing Gemini through work or school accounts, meaning visible watermarks will remain enabled for those accounts.

Google said the setting applies specifically to Gemini Apps on web and mobile and does not change watermark policies for AI features offered through other Google products.
