Good Omens season 3 has set a new Rotten Tomatoes record.
The Prime Video fantasy TV show has set a new audience score record within a day of the final episode's arrival on the platform. Good Omens season 3 is a single, 90-minute episode that wraps up the story of the entire show. The story follows Aziraphale and Crowley after going their separate ways in season 2, the angel tasked with bringing about the apocalypse via the Second Coming. However, when Jesus and the Book of Life vanish, he recruits Crowley to help him find the Messiah and stop the world from ending.
Now, Rotten Tomatoes reports that audiences are unhappy with the way Good Omens season 3 ended the series, based on the season's record-low audience score. As of writing, season 3 of the fantasy show holds a 40% from audiences based on over 100 reviews. While some reviews are satisfied with the way the show ended, particularly with how the writing measures up to the previous two seasons, many are displeased with how Aziraphale and Crowley's story ended. This lack of satisfaction permeates many ratings for the show.
Good Omens reviews haven't been particularly kind to the final episode either. As of writing, the final season has a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 15 reviews, making it by far the lowest-rated installment of the entire show. Critics aren't happy with the rushed pacing of the episode, which feels like a full season of TV squashed into a movie format. While some were forgiving of the ending, others agreed with audience members that it didn't do justice to the core duo, whose story was upended by the format.
There's also a large shadow cast across season 3's production due to its creator, Neil Gaiman, stepping away after being accused of sexual assault by five women. The creator of the show previously wrote every episode of seasons 1 and 2, while Douglass Mackinnon directed. As for season 3, while the story is still credited to Gaiman, the script was also written by Michael Marshall Smith and Peter Atkins. The episode was directed by Rachel Talalay as well, making it a generally different creative team behind the finale than the rest of the show.
The terrible actions of the series' creator ultimately doomed the show, as audiences clearly revile the way the series ended for the core duo. It's unclear how much of the final episode was part of Gaiman's original plan, nor what the ending of Good Omens season 3 could have been. However, season 3 was originally going to run for a full six episodes, with the story getting condensed after the creator's departure.
Given the swiftness of the ending, it appears Good Omens season 3 was impacted heavily by the accusations against Gaiman and his subsequent stepping away from the show. The audience response, which is aimed at how Aziraphale and Crowley didn't earn a satisfying conclusion, is one that further sours the once-revered nature of the series. With the show's reception so bad, it gives the series an unfortunate ending for many of its long-time fans.
