2026 has already had a modern take on James Bond in game form thanks to IO Interactive's 007 First Light, and now it's getting some retro bondage thanks to a throwback spy FPS that's been in the works for a while. Agent 64: Spies Never Die, a GoldenEye-inspired romp from solo developer Replicant D6, releases next month.

August 11th is the date you'll want to circle on your calendar, with Replicant D6 having locked it in via a post on Steam. "After a grueling 5 and a half years of work," they wrote. "I can finally put a final release date down. Everything is almost ready and set. Let's make it worth it!"

Spies Never Die has had a demo out on the platform for a good chunk of that five year push to release. "You'll fire from the hip without crosshairs but forgiving auto-aim, then use the right mouse button to switch to a specific aiming mode for shooting off padlocks or getting headshots," Graham (RPS in peace) wrote after playing it back in 2022. "Enemies, meanwhile, run into view carelessly, flee when shot, and have feet that never quite seem connected to the floor."

The full game boasts 14 missions in which you play spyman John Walter, whose nemesis Dominic Pulp is hellbent on taking over the world. Stopping him will require hacking terminals, nicking plans, freeing hostages, and murdering a lot of blokes in suits across a variety of settings. The main story can be played solo or with mates via split-screen or online.

Once you're done with that, there's a "paradox mode" which is unlocked via challenges like beating missions within a certain time and lets you play versions of them spiced up with cheats and modifiers. Big heads, a melee slap mode, and a reloading ban are among these quirky twists. If you're in the mood to see who out of your mates is the top agent, there's also an arena mode for multiplayer battles with up to 8 players and 8 bots at a time. Classic deathmatches are the default, but you can also base a match around capturing a briefcase or holding map zones. Finally, there are special score challenge matches against bots, which unlock new maps, characters, and music tracks.

If any of that has shaken or stirred your desire for some retro spy action, you can wishlist Agent 64: Spies Never Die on Steam to stay in the loop ahead of August 11th.
