Sony Santa Monica's spinoff slides out of February 2027
Sony Santa Monica has announced it has made the decision to delay God of War Laufey. The upcoming spinoff game of the iconic PlayStation series was initially slated to be released next February, but players will now have to wait a few extra months to get their hands on it. The studio has set a new release date for the PlayStation 5 exclusive, pushing the game to May 2027.
Son's Santa Monica Studio made the announcement in a statement on X, explaining that it will use the extra time to push the game to its fullest potential. Here's the studio's full message:
Since the reveal of God of War Laufey in June, we’ve been deeply grateful to see so much excitement for Faye’s journey through the Everywhen. We don’t take for granted the trust placed in our studio to make an extraordinary experience worthy of the passion and dedication of our fans.
With this in mind, we’ve made the decision to delay God of War Laufey’s release to May 20th, 2027.
We will make the most of each moment until then by putting in the finishing touches and pushing the game to its fullest potential.
On behalf of everyone on the team, we appreciate your patience and we’ll be back to share more updates soon!
Laufey stars Deborah Ann Woll in the titular role, the wife of longtime series protagonist Kratos. Faye (as she is referred to) was first introduced in God of War (2018), which begins with her funeral, but players never actually met her until 2022's God of War Ragnarök, in which Woll first portrayed her. Laufey was officially revealed during this year's June State of Play after months of rumors about its existence.

If you are asking yourself how Faye could be the protagonist of a game when she died in God of War (2018), then don't worry, Sony Santa Monica has an answer. Laufey will take place concurrently with the 2018 soft reboot and its sequel, showing the character's own adventure. It will take her to the Everywhen, an afterlife for the gods, in which she will attempt to help Kratos and their son Atreus from beyond the grave. Woll will be joined by Jack Quaid as Phranque (a talking cube), Perlina Lau as Rue, and Christopher Judge back again as Kratos. Considering this is Faye's story, Kratos will likely only have a minor role.
Laufey will also be a bit of a mechanical departure for the series. While it is still going to be an action-forward affair, Faye's combat is much more acrobatic and evokes Devil May Cry. Faye also has the ability to punch people so hard that their souls leave their bodies (kind of like that scene in Doctor Strange). It is clear that Faye will be just as powerful and dangerous as her husband. While Sony Santa Monica is developing Laufey, it has also confirmed that a new mainline game in the series led by Kratos is in development. Amazon is also currently developing a live-action adaptation of the 2018 soft reboot, with Dave Bautista set to star as Kratos.
God of War Laufey will be released on May 20, 2027 on PlayStation 5.
