Giovanna Fletcher reveals she suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage after 'surprise' pregnancy aged 40

Giovanna Fletcher has revealed she suffered a heartbreaking miscarriage last year after a 'surprise' pregnancy at the age of 40. 

The podcaster and author, now 41, has been married to McFly vocalist and guitarist Tom Fletcher, 40, since 2012 and the couple share three sons; Buzz, Buddy and Max.

For the 300th episode of her podcast Happy Mum Happy Baby on Tuesday, Giovanna sat on the other side of the table for once as she was interviewed by her best friend, Emma Willis.

'I had another miscarriage last year, a chemical pregnancy, well it was a surprise pregnancy,' Giovanna told her friend as she became emotional. 

'I haven't talked about it publicly, but also my response to it was very different this time. Don't get me wrong, it was f**** ing hard.'

Holding back tears, Giovanna said she doesn't believe couples should have to wait until the 12-week mark in a pregnancy to tell people as it means they can't necessarily be there if a miscarriage happens before that time. 

'I don't agree with the 12-week rule, you need the support of the people around you,' she said. 

'So allow yourself to feel other people's joy, but also their sadness if there is a loss.' 

Giovanna went on to reveal she had completely rearranged the year ahead as she prepared to welcome a baby and was even looking forward to having a reason to slow down.  

'When the pregnancy ended, I suddenly thought well, I need to maybe change how I do things in 2026, because I need to be able to enjoy the things I am doing, rather than constantly feeling like I am just getting through the things, because they're all things I love doing,' she continued. 'Let's not get through, let's enjoy life.'

The former I'm A Celebrity winner reflected on how expecting a baby at 40 years had felt different to her previous pregnancies. 

She said: 'It did feel so different and it's a very individual thing and for me I've got three incredible kids and four is a lot of kids. 

'It's one of those things where if the pregnancy had worked out, then it would have been a blessing. What a blessing to have another baby, like that is such an incredible thing. 

'However, I am so comfortable with this chapter that we're in now and it felt very different to be going through a loss that isn't surrounded by desperation and that fear that it might never happen. 

'I am not pining, but it's been a different thing to get my head around.'

Back in 2017, Giovanna spoke about suffering a devastating miscarriage with her first baby before going on to welcome her sons.

She opened up about the difficult news, saying she had blamed her own body for 'failing her'.

Giovanna told BUILD Series: 'When it comes to miscarriage I think we're all too scared to say something. I felt like I could never say anything to friends because people feel like it's contagious.

'It's a really rubbish thing that happens and it happens to so many people. All you really want in that moment is a hug. You feel like your body has failed you and that's your first experience as a mother. 

'I fell pregnant very quickly and I had this thing in my head that it was just too easy. After being worried for so long that it wouldn't be easy it just happened. 

'And then I miscarried not long after that and I think part of me felt that would happen, because I felt that it was too easy. Because I felt that I hadn't earned it. 

'If that didn't happen I wouldn't have Buzz and Buzz will forever be my silver lining.'
