Warner Bros. Television is taking a trip down memory lane to reminisce on its seminal coming-of-age series Gilmore Girls.
An untitled documentary about the series, which ran from 2000 to 2007, is currently in the works for HBO Max, the studio revealed on Wednesday. In Waves and War and Athlete A helmer Bonni Cohen will direct. The film marks the first-ever authorized doc about Gilmore Girls, more than 25 years after it premiered.
Offering a rare insider view into the creation of Gilmore Girls, told straight from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, featuring Lauren Graham as well as additional key cast and crew, the documentary reveals how the show eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon by unpacking the unique alchemy of the creators, cast, crew, and collaborators. The film includes never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage, and script pages.
The doc is produced by This Machine Filmworks in association with Warner Horizon Unscripted Television. Executive producers are Mark Blatty, Jane Cha Cutler, R.J. Cutler, Daniel Palladino, Elise Pearlstein, Amy Sherman-Palladino, and Trevor Smith; producers, Bonni Cohen and Melissa Robledo.
While there’s never been an authorized documentary before now, Warner Bros. has celebrated the series in various fashions throughout the years. Last year, Alexis Bledel reunited with Graham at the Emmys to present an award from a recreation of the show’s recognizable front porch of Rory and Lorelai Gilmore’s Stars Hollow home.
There was also the Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. The series of four 90-minute telepics premiered in 2016.
