Golden Bachelor's Theresa Nist Reveals Real Reason for Gerry Turner Split
Gerry Turner is opening up about a health journey.
Nearly eight months after the former Golden Bachelor star and his season’s winner Theresa Nistannounced their four-month marriage was ending in divorce, the 72-year-old shared he was diagnosed with bone cancer amid the final days of their relationship.
“There's a topic that I haven't wanted to talk about until now,” Gerrytold People in an article published Dec. 11. “As Theresa and I were trying very hard to find our lifestyle and where we were going to live and how we were going to make our life work, I was unfortunately diagnosed with cancer.”
TheBachelor Nation star noted that he was finally sharing the news because it will “clear up a lot of mystery” as to what he was privately battling during his and Theresa’s short marriage.
Gerry’s cancer, which he described as a “bone marrow cancer” with a “really long name” is Waldenström's macroglobulinemia, which according to Mayo Clinic, begins in the white blood cells and causes them to become cancerous. The five-year survival rate for Waldenström's macroglobulinemia patients is 90 percent, according to the American Cancer Society.
“Unfortunately, there's no cure for it,” Gerry noted. “So that weighs heavily in every decision I make. It was like 10 tons of concrete were just dropped on me. And I was a bit in denial for a while, I didn't want to admit to it.”
Still, Gerry’s path to diagnosis was not a straight line. He was first recommended to an oncologist after some unusual markings appeared on his blood work at a doctor’s appointment. Gerry explained that he was initially diagnosed with a blood disorder early on, before being definitively told it was cancer in February. He told his then-wife of his diagnosis the next month.
“It was hard for me," Gerry said, saying Theresa was “awestruck” by the news. “I wanted my life to continue on as normal as possible, and that led me to believing that as normal as possible more meant spending time with my family, my two daughters, my two son-in-laws, my granddaughters.”

He noted that his marriage quickly fell down his list of priorities, adding, “The importance of finding the way with Theresa was still there, but it became less of a priority.”
As he continues his life without Theresa by his side, he emphasized that he wishes his ex “all of the good luck in the world.”
“It was wonderful,” he said of the “whirlwind” time with Theresa, “and I certainly wish it would've had a different ending, that we would've found our way, that we would've found solutions to a problem. And most of all, that I would not have had a diagnosis that so strongly influenced my decisions and the direction I went.”
