Gerard Butler may not have any Oscar nominations under his belt, but he’s handily become one of the biggest action stars in the world over the last 20 years. Between his work in the Fallen movies and also a pair of Den of Thieves thrillers, Butler has proven time and time again that he’s capable of delivering an entertaining action hit, even if it doesn’t exactly resonate with critics. He’s also the voice of Stoick in the How to Train Your Dragon movies, and he was one of the few to reprise the role in last year’s live-action adaptation of the film.
Three years ago, Butler starred opposite Tom Rhys Harries and Farhad Bagheri in Kandahar, the dark ops thriller following a CIA operative and his translator who flee from Afghanistan after they jointly expose a covert operation. Butler’s Kandahar co-star, Tom Rhys Harries, will next be seen in the DCU’s Clayface movie. Kandahar grossed only $9 million at the box office, and the film earned scores of 45% from critics and 82% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Ric Roman Waugh (Shelter) directed the film with a script from Mitchell LaFortune, who wrote a part for himself as an SCIF Analyst.
In America, Kandahar is available to watch on multiple streaming services, including Prime Video. It’s also streaming for free on Pluto TV, Tubi, and even the Roku Channel. Kandahar is the closest Butler has ever come to playing a character similar to Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher. Both are high-level operatives with military experience who find themselves in situations only they can get out of. Fans of Reacher are almost guaranteed to love Kandahar, and vice versa.
What’s Going On With Gerard Butler’s New Sci-Fi Movie?
Gerard Butler began this year with Greenland 2: Migration, the sci-fi sequel co-starring Morena Baccarin. Greenland 2 was one of the first movies to open at the box office this year, but many felt the film was in trouble when it was reported to be carrying a $90 million budget. At the time of writing, Greenland 2: Migration has recuperated only $21 million of this back at the box office — it’s shaping up to be one of the biggest sci-fi bombs of all time. Butler is currently filming the live-action sequel to 2025’s How to Train Your Dragon.
Check out Kandahar on Prime Video or Pluto TV in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
