Meanwhile Rob Brydon revealed many of the cast were 'genuinely' left gobsmacked while reading the final script for the first time.

Gavin and Stacey: The Making Of The Finale will air in two 12-minute shows, with part one airing on BBC Breakfast on Christmas eve at 7.50am and iPlayer.

It comes after actor Rob, 59, who stars as  lovable Bryn West in the hit BBC show teased that the finale may tie up is what happened with Bryn and Jason (Robert Wilfort) during their fishing trip years ago.

While the fishing trip has often been alluded to, fans never found out what did happen that day between him and Bryn, only knowing that whatever they did, is 'legal in Wales'.

Speaking on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast Rob has now teased: 'I'm not gonna tell you, but you wouldn't really want to know, would you?

'See, I'm somebody who if my wife has bought me a present, yeah, say at Christmas or birthday, say at Christmas and it's under the tree.

'There is no part of me that wants to go. I wonder this. No, no, no, I am for delayed gratification. Let's wait. Let's build. Let's let's enjoy it. And even when I'm opening it, I'm opening it slowly.

'I want this moment to last. I'm going, oh, save the wrapping. I take my time. And also, even when I've taken the wrapping off, I might not have looked at it yet. I might have done that and gone, oh, because isn't that all about enjoying life.'

The finale trailer released last week saw Gwen confront her son and brother-in law once and for all, demanding they fess up about what happened.

The clip sees her telling a very distressed looking Bryn and Jason: '30 years ago you two went on a fishing trip that almost tore this family apart'.

On the podcast Rob also discussed what he thinks makes the show - which first aired in 2007 - so popular.

He said of when they first began filming: 'I knew it was good. They knew it was really strong.

'Well, you just make a make a qualitative judgment. I mean, I always say that the fact is, most things are not hits, right. Most TV shows are not hits. Most films are not hits. Most books are not hits, most records are not hits, right.

'Most of them just come and go, and that's okay. But then on this so the script, you go, so being Welsh, I look at its portrayal of Wales, and I go, oh yeah, yeah, that chimes with me. These characters are terrific.

'And all the characters are so well drawn. You know, they could all stand their own show.

Speaking on Jamie Laing 's Great Company podcast Rob has now teased: 'I'm not gonna tell you, but you wouldn't really want to know, would you?'

'It is beautifully written. I mean, what James and Ruth have done in that script. It's as good as anything, because it combines incredible character studies with tight, tight plot.'

After 17 years, Gavin & Stacey will finally come to an end on Christmas Day, with one last episode to say goodbye to the beloved comedy.

The upcoming special will mark the BBC 's sitcom's return for the first time in five years and fans are desperate to know what writers James and Ruth have planned.

At the climax of the last Christmas episode in 2019, Nessa Jenkins got down on one knee to propose to Smithy, but viewers never got to hear his response.

And while viewers were left with a host of unanswered questions, the finale is sure to wrap up many loose ends.
