Gary King is one of the most controversial cast members on Below Deck Sailing Yacht and the franchise at large, but he's not getting a villain edit so far in season 5. Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher returned alongside her former fling and friend for a tumultuous romp on the sailing yacht, but she's turning into more of a villain than him. Her incompetent and lazy stews, Danni Warren and Diana Cruz, have forced her to resort to more authoritarian tactics with her interior crew.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 might allow Gary to redeem himself, but it could also be producer interference. Gary was accused of sexual misconduct after an incident with former Bravo employee Samantha Suarez while filming the previous season. While he's denied all allegations, the network still uninvited him from BravoCon 2023. Other than a slap on the wrist, Gary has mostly gotten off scot-free.
Gary Is Getting A Better Edit Compared To Other Seasons
He's Positioned Himself As A Good Guy
Gary has positioned himself as a good guy on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, a surprising shift from previous seasons. He's trying to help incompetent Deckhand Emma Crouch improve upon her work ethic and skills onboard instead of immediately asking for Captain Glenn Shephard to let her go. Gary also gave in when Daisy asked him to pick up crew members in the tender to switch them out despite initially throwing a fit.

Gary crashed a tender while trying to flirt with a hired dancer, but even that was downplayed. Chef Cloyce Martin has a better chance of becoming a bad guy due to his insubordination. Additionally, Daisy isn't mincing words and continues to stir the pot so she could eventually become a season villain.
Gary's Romantic Escapades Are Less Prevalent
He Kissed Danni After The Last Charter
Gary's romantic escapades have been less prevalent this season, but there are signs he could still get himself into trouble aboard the Parsifal III. Danni has spent most of the season flirting, with her sights set on Deckhand Keith Allen. However, when he didn't give her the attention she desired, Danni set her eyes on Gary. The two drunkenly kissed in the ocean after a crew night out, with Gary immediately regretting the interaction.
Gary's flirty nature always gets him into trouble, and he's already engaged in a potential boatmance situation with Danni.
Daisy gave Gary a stern talking to when he admitted to the kiss. She chastised him for repeating his previous mistakes "six or seven times" and reminded him he was eleven years older than Danni. However, Gary's storyline thus far has centered on his difficulties in mentoring Emma. If producers remain involved, they may steer him away from romantic storylines due to his tumultuous past.
Did Producers Help Clean Up Gary's Act?
They Want Fans To Forget His Past Behavior
Producers definitely gave Gary a good edit on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5. After allegations arose regarding his sexual misconduct, filming for the current season was already underway. Gary is a main character, and it would be difficult to edit him out. Despite fan backlash, there was no way that Bravo would scrap an entire season. It was also probably too complicated to reduce Gary's role. Therefore, production settled on making Gary look as good as possible. He's definitely not going to get a villain edit this season to help fans forget his past transgressions.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo and streams the next day on Peacock.
