Gallup To End Tracking Of Presidential Job Approval

The Gallup Organization will no longer track presidential approval numbers, ending a gathering of data that goes back to Franklin Roosevelt.

Gallup’s most recent presidential approval rating for Donald Trump, measured from Dec. 1-15, put the president at 36% approve and 59% disapprove.

A spokesperson for Gallup told The Washington Post, “The context around these measures has changed. They are now widely produced, aggregated and interpreted, and no longer represent an area where Gallup can make its most distinctive contribution.”

Dozens of other polls are now done on presidential approval, but Gallup pioneered such data collection, giving a real-time indication of the direction of voter sentiment month to month.

Trump has attacked pollsters who have given him low marks, in some cases threatening to sue or, in the case of Ann Selzer, actually filing litigation.

Per Gallup data going back to Harry Truman’s presidency, Truman had both the highest and lowest approval numbers. He was at 87% job approval in June, 1945, and 22% in February, 1952.
