Rodrigo García has been a go-to director of television dating back to its most recent Golden Age, from HBO’s “Big Love” to the cabler’s English-language remake of “In Treatment.” The Emmy-nominated Colombian-born Mexican filmmaker’s feature work has spanned from great aughts indies like “Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her” and “Nine Lives,” plus the Oscar-nominated “Albert Nobbs,” and, more recently, the films “Familia” and “The Follies” at Netflix.
Now, he’s directing his first proper series for the streamer with “Santita,” which unveiled its first trailer on Thursday. García brings with him beloved Mexican actor Gael García Bernal and star Paulina Dávila for the seven-episode series created and written by Luis Cámara (“You’re Killing Me, Susana”) and Gabrielle Galanter (“Steel Trap”). IndieWire shares the first footage below.
Per a synopsis shared with IndieWire, the series tells the story of María José Cano (Dávila), a woman using a wheelchair after an accident, who abandons the love of her life (García Bernal) at the altar. Now, two decades later, she must face the consequences of her past when he unexpectedly reenters her life. Dubbed “Santita” despite being more sinner than saint, María José’s journey is a wickedly irreverent and unconventional love story.
The Spanish-language series takes place in Tijuana, where Santita goes in search of a better sex life. “We did a lot of research to try to keep it as grounded and as real as possible, especially with respect to Santita’s sex life. This is someone who, because of her disability, has not had an orgasm for close to two decades, but she knows that some women with similar injuries do reach orgasm. So, she has been searching for it,” García Bernal told Variety.
Rodrigo García’s past TV work also includes “The Sopranos” and “Six Feet Under” at HBO, plus Showtime’s “The Affair.” He’s next executive producing and directing half of an eight-episode limited series at FX called “Cry Wolf,” from “The Affair” co-creator Sarah Treem. Olivia Colman stars as a social worker investigating abuse allegations within a family, opposite Brie Larson.
“Santita” streams on Netflix starting April 22. Watch the trailer below.
