The true spiritual successor to Fullmetal Alchemist arrives this April. The mid-2000s era of anime produced a remarkable run of now-iconic series that still define the medium for an entire generation of fans. Titles like Death Note, Code Geass, Bleach, and Naruto helped anime break into the global mainstream. But even in that crowded golden age, Fullmetal Alchemist stands apart.
Fullmetal Alchemist's success wasn’t accidental. Hiromu Arakawa crafted a story with clear rules and an ending that truly felt earned, culminating in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood's love letter to the manga, regularly cited as one of the greatest anime ever made. Its influence can be felt in how modern anime approaches long-form storytelling. Now, years later, FMA's legacy evolves with a new series from the same creator.
Hiromu Arakawa's New Anime Yomi No Tsugai Releases This Year
Yomi No Tsugai May Be One Of 2026's Best Releases
Legendary Fullmetal Alchemist creator Hiromu Arakawa is officially returning to anime in a major way. With crisp animation and a tone that leans heavily into mystery and folklore, Yomi no Tsugai is already on track to be the long-awaited official successor to one of the most beloved anime of all time. Set to premiere on April 4, 2026, Yomi no Tsugai teases its action-packed first two seasons with a new trailer.
Yomi no Tsugai follows twins Yuru and Asa, who discover they can control the dual entities Tsugai, or Daemons, as they reunite years after being separated as children. Unlike Fullmetal Alchemist's alchemy-based lore, Yomi no Tsugai leans into Japanese folklore and full-fledged fantasy. The original manga has been praised for its world-building and Arakawa’s continued mastery of character-driven storytelling. With its anime adaptation finally on the horizon, Yomi no Tsugai offers something just as powerful as, but still fundamentally different from, Fullmetal Alchemist.
Yomi No Tsugai Is A True Spiritual Successor To Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist's plot is lean, with little filler. Its power system has clear in-world limitations and costs, which makes it easy to understand and safe from power bloat. Combined with consistent animation quality and a good balance of action and story, these qualities make Fullmetal Alchemist endlessly rewatchable. Hiromu Arakawa’s Yomi no Tsugai manga shares the same strengths, which its anime adaptation is likely to inherit.
At the same time, Yomi no Tsugai differentiates itself by leaning further into fantasy, a distinct departure from Fullmetal Alchemist’s sci-fi-tinged alchemy and pseudo-industrial setting. Where FMA explored science and war through a technological lens, Yomi no Tsugai uses rural isolation and supernatural rules. The result is a story that can deliver the same level of rewatchability that fans expect, but with a fresh lore and a brand-new cast of characters.
