Warning: There are spoilers ahead for From season 4, episode 2, "Fray."A major From theory about Randall Kirkland (A.J. Simmons) has been officially debunked. Randall was first introduced in season 2 as one of the many characters aboard the bus that comes into the Township. He spent most of his debut season being confrontational with practically all of From's characters, even those trying to help him, and being convinced that the Township was some kind of simulation or psychological experiment.

Another important revelation in season 3 was after Randall and Julie stumbled upon ruins in the woods, Julie discovered she was a storywalker, which means she can time travel to select points in the Township's history, but she cannot change what happened. Between Randall and Julie being possessed and surviving together, them both sensing something in the ruins, and Julie being a storywalker, Randall also being a storywalker became a popular theory, but this has now been debunked.

From Season 4, Episode 2 Confirms Randall Isn’t A Storywalker

In the aftermath of the horrifying discovery that her father, Jim Matthews (Eion Bailey), has been brutally killed, Julie goes to Randall and the two of them return to the ruins. Despite what her brother, Ethan Matthews (Simon Webster), previously told her about being unable to change the story, Julie is determined to travel back in time and change her father's fate.

Before she goes inside the ruins to storywalk, she has Randall go in. Unlike her, he does not collapse, start having a seizure, or travel through time, and he is completely unaffected by being there. This confirms that Randall is not a storywalker, which allows him to go inside the ruins and pull Julie out of there to stop her seizing and time traveling.

Marielle has not been to the ruins yet, so it's unconfirmed whether she is a storywalker, but the From season 4 theory of her being revealed to have this ability seems less likely now. Of the trio that was possessed by the Music Box Monster and survived in season 2, Julie appears to be the sole individual who can storywalk.

Debunking The Randall Storywalker Theory Raises An Important Question About Julie

Now that it's been shown that Randall isn't a storywalker, it further raises the question of why Julie has this ability, as it seemingly has nothing to do with the Music Box Monster possession. One possibility is that Julie's powers are related to her lineage. Her mother, Tabitha Matthews (Catalina Sandino Moreno), has lived many past lives in the Township and keeps being brought back over and over again.

Perhaps Tabitha's unique history and connection to the Town has given her daughter the means to storywalk. This ability may only be present in a female child, as Ethan was unaffected when he went into the ruins in season 3, and Victor Kavanaugh (Scott McCord), the male child Tabitha had during her past life as Miranda (Sarah Booth), doesn't seem to have the ability either. It would be fitting for one of Tabitha's children to have a power that can potentially help save the dead children trapped in the Town.

Another possibility, one that is darker, is that Julie is a storywalker because it is the best way for the Township to torment her. Giving her the ability to time travel and to make her believe she can save her father, only for her to repeatedly fail, is an effective way to keep providing false hope, only to crush it.

With From confirmed to be ending with season 5, the origins of Julie's storywalking is among the many mysteries that the series needs to answer before it concludes.
