Jason Voorhees wearing his hockey mask in a Friday the 13th movie

New Friday the 13th inspired art shows a look at Jason and his mother. Jason Voorhees is the classic masked killer from the series Friday the 13th. The first Friday the 13th movie was released in 1980, and followed up in 1981 with Friday the 13th Part 2. Since then, there have been multiple renditions of Friday the 13th, including more sequels and a 2009 remake. Jason is now one of the most popular horror villains out there, and is transformed into countless Halloween costumes.

Now, art from @master_of_cringe_art shows a look at Jason and his mother. The artists revealed the digital art in a series of photos. In the first photo, Jason is seen in his full killer garb, replete with his iconic mask. He embraces his mother, Mrs. Voorhees. In subsequent images, the artist showed some in-progress shots of how the piece went from a sketch to a fully colored in art piece.

The caption for the post reads "So this was originally supposed to be a post for Mother’s Day, but I didn’t get to finish it in time. So anyways, here’s a wholesome recreation of a popular photo of Jason and his mom!!"

What This Friday The 13th Art Makes Reference To

This Art Recreates A Real Photo

Friday the 13th - Betsy Palmer as Pamela Voorhees

The artist makes reference to the fact that their piece is a "recreation" of a "popular photo of Jason and his mom." In the final image in the Instagram posts, the artist includes said photo. In that image, actor Betsy Palmer smiles at the camera while embracing her son, Jason. While she is wearing a sweater similar to the one she sported in the original Friday the 13th movie, the exact origins of the photo were not stated and remain unclear.

The artist is right in assessing that this is a more "wholesome" moment between Jason and Mrs. Voorhees. This is a more joyful look at Pamela Voorhees, before her death by decapitation. Pamela was killed by Alice Hardy, who used Pamela's own machete knife to slay Mrs. Voorhees. While Alice is a hero for killing Pamela after her Camp Crystal Lake massacre, Alice unfortunately becomes the first victim of Jason.

Why Pamela Voorhees Remains An Iconic Horror Villain

Mrs. Voorhees Keeps Friday the 13th Interesting

Mrs. Voorhees wields a knife in Friday the 13th

When one thinks of Friday the 13th, an image of Jason Voorhees is often the first thing that comes to mind. But looking back at this art, I am struck again by how fascinating of a character Pamela Voorhees is. While she is considered a secondary antagonist for the original film, it is her legacy which Jason follows. As a result, Mrs. Voorhees character stands in for some kind of generational passing down of violence, adding an extra layer to the Friday the 13th movies that allow them to become more than simple slasher films.
