Dungeons and Dragons is offering players a new and free magic item that may prove indispensable to your party during any type of campaign, should you have the space for it. Freebies for the popular TTRPG have started getting a bit more common since the release of the monthly drop system, but they aren’t limited to the subscription service. In June, a free D&D adventure download was made available for all players, allowing players to tackle a short level 1 one-shot, which can serve as either an introduction to the TTRPG or a breather for veterans.
Now, Wizards of the Coast has offered a brand-new D&D freebie for everyone to grab. The bundle, called Dungeon Masters: Living Spells Play-Along Pack, is available entirely for free to claim on D&D Beyond. All you’ll have to do is log in with your account and claim the content, which will then be added permanently to your library. The pack contains seven monster stat blocks, a unique background, a special encounter, a magic item, and more. From among everything introduced, the magic item may be the best part of the bundle.
Technically speaking, players are expected to complete the free adventure in D&D, and upon doing so, they’ll be granted the magic item, called the Idol of Good Fortunes. Nevertheless, this doesn’t impede you, as a DM, from introducing the item under any other scenario, as part of your campaign, for example. The Idol of Good Fortunes is a Wondrous Item that has varying rarity, since it has different states.
In its Blemished (Uncommon) version, players can cast Augury from the idol, once per day. The Tarnished (Rare) version gives the attuned character a +1 bonus to Armor Class. Additionally, they can take the Magic action to touch a nonmagical trade bar or gemstone to transform it into equivalent coinage. Lastly, the Golden (Very Rare) version of this magic item in D&D lets the character cast Globe of Invulnerability for free, once per day.
The true power of this magic item lies with its Tarnished (Rare) version. While the ability to transform material into coinage is extremely useful, the +1 bonus to Armor Class is extremely valuable. It’s quite difficult to gain more AC in any standard campaign in Dungeons and Dragons. Armor Class usually stems from armor, shields, and Dexterity, and gaining anything beyond that usually revolves around getting magical armor or shields.
A simple +1 to AC isn’t game-breaking, and it’s a fine treat for any party, since it serves literally any player at the table. At worst, players will discuss among themselves who needs the bonus the most. The Idol of Good Fortunes feels like a good magic item to throw into most types of Dungeons and Dragons campaigns, but you could, potentially, introduce it with the special free encounter gifted to all players on Beyond.
