Back in 2003, horror fans everywhere got to experience something truly special. Two of the greatest and most iconic figureheads in the genre collided on the big screen in Freddy vs. Jason. Neither horror franchise was doing anything at this time, so it was a nice surprise to hear that this movie was arriving.
Unfortunately, critics weren't fans of Freddy vs. Jason, giving it negative reviews. In fact, the film currently sits at 42% on Rotten Tomatoes and while that's not good, it is higher than a lot of their individual films. Regardless, fans of slashers know that the movie is actually kind of perfect for the subgenre.
The key to Freddy vs. Jason was indeed in its title. Horror fans everywhere had constant debates about who the top horror villains were and who would win in a fight. This film allowed everyone to see what would happen.
This kind of tactic has worked for other movies like Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice or Godzilla vs. Kong, yet it's not something we've seen much in horror. The actual battles between the two also lived up to the hype, giving audiences exactly what they came to the theater to see.
Freddy Vs. Jason Ended With A Definitive Winner
The biggest selling point of seeing Freddy Kruger collide with Jason Voorhees is learning who would actually win. Far too often do these kinds of movies not provide a definitive answer. Godzilla vs. Kong led to the two behemoths teaming up, but the film doesn't shy away from Godzilla winning.
Freddy vs. Jason does the same thing. In the end, Jason ultimately beheads Freddy and is declared the winner. Despite that, the movie still makes sure to leave some room open for interpretation as the severed head of Freddy winks at the camera. That's kind of the perfect way to end the film.
The Over-The-Top Action And Kills Are Great
While it's nice to have well-received slasher movies like X, most of the Scream franchise, and You're Next, a lot of fans of the subgenre come for the wackiness of it all. They appreciate over-the-top kills, campiness, gore, and ridiculous dialogue delivered by generic characters.
Freddy vs. Jason gives you all of that, and it's especially true when it comes to the action. Freddy is having a blast whenever someone is around for him to kill, while Jason is chopping people down with his machete at every turn. Freddy vs. Jason might not be a great movie but it's an ideal slasher romp.
