Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

The Final Fantasy franchise has gone from strength to strength since it first launched on the original Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1987, and being a fan really does pay off, especially with the news that a brand-new entry is expected to launch later this year.

Consisting of 16 mainline entries as well as multiple spin-offs, the Final Fantasy franchise encompasses everything that the role-playing genre has to offer and, despite its age, its popularity continues to grow.

That is why fans are over the moon to learn that another Final Fantasy game is expected to launch later this year.

Final Fantasy Is Officially Back This Year

A collaboration between Square Enix and KessCo will see a brand-new Final Fantasy board game release in Q3 of 2026. Inspired by the Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remasters, the board game will officially be unveiled at this year's Toy Fair and will begin a whole new line of releases.

Final Fantasy: The Board Game will mark the beginning of this new line with the first covering the events of Final Fantasy I - III. If you are a fan of the games, you will appreciate the fact that this new range aims to encapsulate the magic of the stories whilst adapting them into a streamlined board game experience.

We're Going Back To The Series' Past

Offering a cooperative experience for 1–4 players, Final Fantasy: The Board Game aims to offer fans the chance to experience the nostalgia of some of the original Final Fantasy titles whilst offering a brand-new way to experience them.

Additionally, with the Square Enix and KessCo collaboration expected to span for many years to come, we can expect them to adapt even more titles in the Final Fantasy series. If this first release covers Final Fantasy I - III, we can expect the future board games to cover the events of Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V, and the much-loved Final Fantasy VI.

Of course, it also depends on the success and sales of this brand-new range of board game, but with Final Fantasy being one of the most successful RPG franchises of all time, it is safe to assume that it will do pretty well.

“We’ve seen how powerful FINAL FANTASY can be in the tabletop space recently, bringing longtime fans and brand-new players into a shared experience,” said Alex Kessler, CEO of KessCo. “We’re excited to partner with Square Enix and continue that momentum with our own faithful adaptation that honors what fans love most about the Pixel Remaster Era while delivering something fun, accessible, and collectible for the tabletop community.”

If you are still not convinced, it is worth noting that Final Fantasy: The Board Game will launch alongside accessories such as collectible dice inspired by the Pixel Remaster format. Set to be unveiled at the Toy Fair, the dice sets will launch with a sculptured character figure which has definitely piqued my interest.
