Naoki Hamaguchi, Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy director, shared juicy details about Revelation's file size and why the physical version requires additional downloads. And as it turns out, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is shaping up to be one of the biggest entries in the series.

Polygon had the opportunity to try a demo of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation at Gamescom, and it was clear that the scale of the game was on another level. The Revelation demo featured every location seen in Rebirth and more. In an interview with VGC, Hamaguchi revealed the real scope of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. While this number isn't final, the game is expected to have a file size of around 200GB. This is just an estimate, as Square Enix is still working on the game, so it could end up being even bigger.

Since PS5 and Xbox Series X discs can only hold about 100GB of data, this means that even two discs might not be enough for consoles to run Revelation solely from disc. That is why Final Fantasy 7 Revelation's physical edition will only include a single disc with partial data. Gamers will still have to download what remains of the game file in order to play it.

Hamaguchi understands that some players might be upset over the physical edition not containing a full copy of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. Nevertheless, he wanted to take a stance and offer a physical product, as an all-digital era is imminent and discs are dying out, particularly on PlayStation.

On the bright side, since a download is required to play the game, fans will immediately receive day-one fixes that might come in a hotfix. This ensures that they play Revelation in its best state. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation comes out Apr. 8, 2027, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and PC.
