EXCLUSIVE: Prague-based sales and distribution outfit Filmotor has acquired worldwide sales rights to Ian Purnell’s debut feature documentary Arctic Link, which has its World Premiere in the Main DOX: AWARD Competition at CPH: DOX.

Arctic Link is directed by Purnell and produced by Franziska Sonder. Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen were co-producers. Cinematography is by Marie Zahir, editing by Chris Wright, sound design and music by Tobias Koch, and post-production and color grading was by Hannes Rüttimann – Postino.

The film’s synopsis reads: A remote corner of Alaska is finally connected to the internet. In the Arctic Ocean, a colossal ship drifts along while thousands of kilometres of fibre optic cable slide from the deck into the dark depths of the sea. The internet cable reaches a remote island in Alaska, one of the last communities left not yet online. The data streams herald a bright future for the local community, now finally connected to the rest of the world. But what does that really mean for the islanders?

“We are incredibly proud to represent Ian Purnell’s Arctic Link as it heads into the main competition at CPH: DOX; it is a rare, visually stunning documentary that masterfully bridges the gap between complex science and high-art cinema,” Filmotor founder Michaela Cajkova said in a statement.

“By deconstructing the invisible infrastructure of fiber-optic cables, the film offers a unique perspective on global connectivity. We are eager to secure the right partnerships with festivals and distributors for its release.”

Producer Franziska Sonder of Ensemble Films added: “We’re very pleased to partner with Filmotor on Arctic Link. Ian Purnell has created a compelling and ambitious debut film, and collaborating with a team that shares our commitment to strong international storytelling makes this project especially exciting.”

Filmotor presents three titles at this year’s CPH: DOX. Alongside Arctic Link in the Main Competition, the company has two films in the Highlights section: Better Go Mad in the Wild by Miro Remo, winner of the Grand Prix at Karlovy Vary IFF (KVIFF), and Silent Flood by Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk, winner of the Best Cinematography Award at IDFA.
