Married for 10 years and the proud parents of a baby boy, Fergie and Josh Duhamel were on track to be become one of Hollywood's rare, successful love stories.
The singer, 50, met her future husband on the set of his comedy drama series Las Vegas before tying the knot in 2007. Their son, Axl, was born six years later.
For a decade, it all was picture perfect. That is, until they shocked fans by announcing their divorce in 2017.
The separation was finalized two years later and Duhamel, 53, has since walked down the aisle again, welcoming another son with new wife Audra Mari, 32. The couple announced this week that Mari is pregnant again, revealing on Instagram that they are 'adding a little girl to our story.'
It's now been six years since Duhamel and Fergie's divorce was officially finalized, but the public's curiosity in their spilt was renewed after he reflected on their divorce during a recent interview.
Now, sources have shed further light on what led to their shock separation and how their conflicting views on expanding the family became the 'big tipping point' in their marriage.
A source close to the former couple told the Daily Mail: 'Josh really wanted to have more children and Fergie was really content with having one and it was a big tipping point in their marriage.
Insiders have revealed the truth behind Fergie and Josh Duhamel's split, after the couple's marriage of 10 years ended in 2017
'He's more of a social butterfly and Fergie is a bit more reserved and quiet. They are both very kind hearted, good people, but they had different directions with what they ultimately wanted out of life when it came to expanding their family.'
The source stressed the duo remain on good terms: 'Fergie thinks Josh is a great dad and they co-parent really well together. There's zero bad blood between them and they both speak very highly of one another. All of the kind things Josh said on the podcast, Fergie feels the same way towards him. It was 100 percent accurate and genuine.'
Another source told the Daily Mail that the separation wasn't surprising considering Fergie typically enjoys operating on her own.
'Fergie is an incredible mother and they co-parent so well, and family for her is super important, but she thrives much better by herself, able to do what she wants to do.
'You can almost suggest that as a reason she isn't with the Black Eyed Peas anymore. There is still respect with the band, but she thrives better when by herself, when she can do a lot more for herself and not be stuck in an environment where she feels emotionally or creatively held back.
'Now that sounds intense and somewhat mean, but she doesn't intend it to be. She just knows the person she is, the mother she is and has to be and being in situations that are overall good for her wellbeing is what is important, and that is why she and Josh didn't end up working out. '
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Fergie and Duhamel for comment.
Memories of their marriage were brought back to the surface after Duhamel appeared on The Skinny Confidential Him & Her Podcast and explained why they broke up.

'We're just very different,' the Ransom Canyon star said to hosts Lauryn and Michael Bosstick. 'She and I just have different views of the world, and that's OK.'
He reflected on the relationship, 'We have a beautiful son.'
Duhamel had nothing but kind words for his ex and explained that she and his current wife are 'both very different in a lot of ways but both really, really great women.'
'Fergie is also very wholesome, believe it or not, especially since she stepped away from it all,' he said about the Black Eyed Peas frontwoman.
'She's a great mom, very kind, very non-confrontational, thank God.'
And all is well on the co-parenting side of things, as he said they 'have a great relationship,' adding, 'She and Audra [also] have a great relationship.'
Duhamel previously explained why things did not work out with his ex-wife in an October 2023 appearance on In Depth With Graham Bensinger.
They started their lives together as man and wife in 2007 and welcomed a son, Axl, in 2013
'I think we kind of outgrew each other and had very different interests,' he said at the time.
He added in the sit-down conversation: 'I made peace with that part of my life. She and I have a great relationship. Both raising that boy together. There wasn't anything wrong with it. We had a great time.'
The Shotgun Wedding star detailed further: 'The older I got, the more I wanted to come out [to North Dakota]. This is not for her. But I've got no hard feelings… I'm very lucky that she's a kind human. I really am.'
Duhamel, who is from Minot, North Dakota, described why he doesn't feel the Hollywood lifestyle is for him.
'I don't think I ever really got comfortable with all of it. It was a lot. I just missed the simplicity of who I really am, you know?
Despite them not working out as a couple, the exes have remained on good terms
Duhamel and his wife in Las Vegas in 2023. He has said that they are 'both hardcore North Dakotans'
'I'm just not a guy who is comfortable going to red carpets. Doing all the Hollywood stuff. Hollywood and LA and that whole lifestyle can suck the soul out of you if you're not careful,' he mused.
Parts of the interview took place in Minnesota, where Duhamel owns a lakeside cabin.
While chatting with the host, he revealed: 'It just took me a long time to really feel like I belong, like I fit in. Having this place out here really allows me to get back to that kid that fell in love with nature, fell in love with the outdoors and being creative and just being active.'
Bringing up his wife, he said: 'That's why Audra's so great for me. We're both hardcore North Dakotans… We both love lake life. We both love family. We both love kids.'
