Image via Courtesy of Briarcliff EntertainmentValentine’s Day weekend usually belongs to romances, but 2026 is lining up a very different kind of date-night pitch for sci-fi fans. A two-film, same-day theater debut that feels tailor-made for couples (or friends) who’d rather trade chocolates for creatures, paranoia, and big ideas might sound surprising, but that’s exactly what’s happening. The fun part is that this isn’t a studio-driven event; it’s the kind of organic double-feature Barbeinheimer-like moment audiences create when two buzzy releases collide on the calendar.
What makes this one especially tempting is how complementary the pair looks on paper. One leans into contained, night-shift chaos: a small group trapped in a bad situation as something unnatural escapes containment. The other plays like a romping sci-fi adventure — time travel, a looming tech threat, and a premise designed to spark debates on the drive home. Even better, early reception suggests neither is arriving as disposable filler.
The collision is all set for February 13, 2026, when Cold Storage and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die will both hit theaters. Cold Storage (directed by Jonny Campbell, written by David Koepp) follows a parasitic fungus outbreak and stars Joe Keery (Stranger Things) and Georgina Campbell (The Watchers), with Liam Neeson and more in the ensemble. It's currently sitting at 91% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Meanwhile, the other title, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die, also has a 93% critics' score on RT, and is a time-travel/AI satire led by Sam Rockwell and directed by the legendary Gore Verbinski.
Why This Double Feature Is Worth Your Time
Part of why this matchup feels unusually promising is that both movies come with creative pedigrees that genre fans tend to follow, even when the projects themselves are smaller-scale. Cold Storage is written by Koepp, the screenwriter behind Jurassic Park, the original Mission: Impossible (1996), Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man (2002), and Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds. Pair that with Joe Keery and Georgina Campbell leading the cast, plus veterans like Liam Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave, and Lesley Manville in the mix, and it starts to look like an indie-sized genre film with heavyweight craft behind it.
On the other side, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die is coming from Verbinski, the filmmaker behind the American remake of The Ring, the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, and Rango. That alone makes this a curious pivot: a director known for big swings returning to a more offbeat, concept-first sci-fi setup. Plus, with Rockwell leading as a time traveler recruiting diner patrons to fight a rogue AI, the film has the kind of strange-but-watchable energy Verbinski tends to lean into when he’s at his best.
Cold Storage and Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die will hit theatres on February 13, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
