James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

The Far Cry franchise has been through some notable ups and downs over the years, but one area where it has almost always excelled is in the antagonists that players have to take on directly. For most, Vaas Montenegro from Far Cry 3 is still the real high point, but each brings something a little different to the party.

The mainline single-player series has been on ice for a little while now, with Far Cry 6 being the last we've seen of it when it dropped back in 2021. That said, it will almost certainly return at some point, with the next game currently in development, though without an official reveal from Ubisoft at this juncture.

In the meantime, fans have been speculating about who exactly they want to step into the shoes of the big bad, and it's safe to say that they're struggling to reach a consensus.

Over on Reddit, one user shared a post containing leaked audio from the upcoming release of Far Cry 7. Underneath, fans started a discussion about who could be leading the next game as the antagonist, and many of those quickly remembered that rumors were once swirling that now Oscar winner Cillian Murphy could be the one chosen.

"I know it’s not relevant, but remember when Cillian Murphy was rumored to be the villain?" one comment read. The responses were unsurprisingly filled with those who wished it were so, with one saying, "Would’ve been really cool, but given how much they wasted Giancarlo Esposito in 6, my expectations for 7 would’ve been very low."

"I thought he was rumored to be the main character. Damn, that’s even better," another added.

Others were predicting something entirely different, with one saying, "I’m betting a 20 it’ll be Antony Starr."

Another has a lot less faith that the villain next time around was going to be as compelling as it should be, saying, "Of all the games using these celebrity actors in them, only Cyberpunk was able to properly utilize them. Twice, might I add!"

Given that we haven't even had an official reveal of the game at this point, it will likely be some time before we actually get to play the next game in the Far Cry series. One factor that is clear, though, is that there is plenty of room for improvement over the recent games, and they'll need more than a big name attached to the project to convince fans that the franchise is back on track.
