As news circulated that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt put an end to their bitter eight-year legal battle in reaching a divorce settlement Monday, a number of fans took to social media marveling over the amount of time and money it took to get to this point.

'So their divorce lasted longer than the marriage,' one Instagram user said of the union, while another added, 'They spent more time on this divorce than they spent being married.'

One user said, 'Why did it take 8yrs?! That’s Ridiculous! That must of been so hard on the their children ... so sad,' while another said, 'It took them 8 years to resolve this. It seems they didn't really want to get divorced that much.'

The divorce technically lasted nearly four times longer than the marriage, which began when the A-listers exchanged vows on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the French winery they shared - and battled over in the legal system - Château Miraval.

They officially split two years and 28 days later when Jolie, 49, filed for divorce from Pitt, 61, on Monday, September 19, 2016.

It has been more than eight years and three months from that date thru Monday, when the split was finalized. (They were individually declared legally single in 2019.)

Other Instagram users pointed out the significant monetary hits both A-listers took with legal fees amid the long-running court case.

'They both must have had great lawyers,' one user said. 'Lawyers can retire now.'

Another commented that 'the attorneys won,' while another said 'those lawyers made some money!'

Said one user: 'Sad the only ppl who got rich were the lawyers.'

Some users speculated on the intense emotions involved on both sides in the long-running legal dispute centered around the winery.

The Rosé-producing winery and drawn-out divorce proceedings inspired puns comparing the split to the 1989 film The War of the Roses, the dark comedy which cast Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a couple in a nasty split.

'Their irreconcilable differences had multiple irreconcilable differences…,' one user observed, while another said, 'That's some serious animosity.'

Some users suggested the relationship was cursed from the outset, as it began during a timeframe Pitt had been wed to Jennifer Aniston. (His divorce to the Friends star, 55, was finalized in October of 2005, 10 months after they separated.)

'That’s karma for them both!!!!!' said one user.

Another remarked, 'They got each other by cheating how did they think it would end up…. i bet they are glad to be done with each other 8 years is a long time in limbo!'

The former Hollywood duo officially signed off on the divorce paperwork on Monday, December 30.

Jolie divorce attorney James Simon told DailyMail.com that the A-list actress is 'relieved this one part is over,' adding, 'Frankly, Angelina is exhausted.

'More than eight years ago, Angelina filed for divorce from Mr. Pitt. She and the children left all of the properties they had shared with Mr. Pitt, and since that time she has focused on finding peace and healing for their family.'

While the former power couple have finally settled their divorce, there is still the ongoing case regarding their battle over Chateau Miraval vineyard in France.

The two have been locked in a bitter legal battle over Miraval after Pitt alleged Jolie sold her share of the winery to the Stoli Group without his approval.

Both sides have said they would be willing to take the Miraval case to a jury trial or mediation, a source told Daily Mail.

A source with knowledge of the situation added Jolie has 'been trying hard to be light after a dark time.'

'She doesn't speak ill of him publicly or privately,' the insider said. 'The kids have grown up seeing that some people have so much power and privilege that their voices don't matter. Their pain doesn't count.

'They have wanted her to speak up for herself, to defend herself over these years but she reminds them to focus on changing laws over telling public stories.'

Jolie filed to end the marriage in September of 2016, just two years after tying the knot. They had dated 10 years before they decided to get married.

It has since been alleged that the couple and their six children, Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne and Knox, had taken a private plane days prior to her filing in which Pitt had become physically abusive.

Pitt was never charged in connection with the incident.

One insider told DailyMail.com 'she could have pressed charges against him.'

'She could have told the world what happened, she didn't. All she wanted was for their children to get the support they needed to heal.

The insider said that 'Pitt successfully used his power and his privilege to cover up his conduct at his family's expense and even attempted to paint her as the reason why his relationship is so challenging with the children.'

Despite the ongoing legal battle, Jolie and Pitt were deemed legally single in 2019.

Pitt has been dating Los Angeles based jewelry designer Ines de Ramon, 34, for almost two years.
