On paper, Grand Theft Auto 5's sandbox experience isn't too different from Bethesda's approach to the Fallout series, which creates large open-worlds for players to explore. That being said, the tone of each game is different, with Fallout's dystopian nuclear wasteland being a far cry from GTA's lively and urban atmospheres in cities like Los Santos. However, one mod seeks to blend these two series together in an interesting way.

Fallout mechanics are added to GTA 5 through The Exclusion Zone mod, uploaded onto 5Mods by user VelyXCore. This mod introduces the concept of severe radiation in Los Santos, giving players an environmental experience similar to Fallout in a variety of ways. With multiple updates to make this mod work, those on PC can download and give The Exclusion Zone a try using the mod page's instructions.

GTA 5 Goes Full Fallout In This Mod

The Nuclear Wasteland Arrives In Specific Locations Throughout The City

GTA 5 The Exclusion Zone mod with character using a Gas Mask to avoid radiation

The Exclusion Zone seeks to add radioactive hotspots to the map of GTA 5, effectively creating Fallout-style irradiated zones to certain locations. This doesn't simply make some places impossible to visit, but simply makes them more dangerous to travel within. The large areas this mod changes into nuclear hazards almost feels like a large piece of a map from Fallout 3 or Fallout 4 that challenge you in different ways.

The moment you step into one of The Exclusion Zone's radiation spaces, a new survival mechanic will activate too. Radiation builds up in your character's system, with the closer you are to the source of radiation accelerating the process. Once your character's new radiation bar hits 100%, you suffer "organ failure," where the irradiated landscape fully harms your character, causing them to collapse and die instantly.

New UI systems allow you to see your character's radiation level fairly easily, letting you know when you've entered the dangerous parts of GTA 5's map through the Exclusion Zone mod.

Among the many mods that exist for GTA 5, this one is perhaps the easiest to get around. Wearing a Gas Mask item will completely stop your character's radiation level from rising, allowing you to travel through the dangerous parts of the map with ease. However, taking that item off will cause the radiation to rise again, possibly leading to an untimely death.

The Exclusion Zone Isn't For The Faint Of Heart

Wide Range Of Dangerous Areas Can Make Travel Difficult

GTA 5 radiation poisoning from Exclusion Zone Fallout mod

Having a Gas Mask at all times to avoid the radiation in The Exclusion Zone mod isn't too hard, but the immersive nature of this Fallout content can seem jarring at first. Unique effects, such as visual screen static and many warnings, can cause the irradiated zones to feel present at all times, making them a constant worry as you travel around GTA 5 for various jobs or missions.

Currently, this mod has five active radiation zones, including:

  • Humane Labs (Critical Threat)
  • Fort Zancudo Delta (High Threat)
  • Sandy Shores Airfield (Medium Threat)
  • LS Airport (Medium Threat)
  • Port Perimeters (Low Threat)

The higher the threat level, the faster your character's radiation level will increase if you don't have the right tools to survive. Unlike big mods for Fallout 4 or other Fallout games, the existence of this Fallout feature in GTA 5 is harder to keep track of due to the faster pace of travel in Rockstar's sandbox. For example, it's incredibly easy to paracute, drive, or accidentally find your way to a dangerous radiation area in The Exclusion Zone mod, causing an unprepared character to die almost instantly.

For players who want a bit of a challenge added to their exploration of Los Santos, The Exclusion Zone is a great mod to try. Even if you aren't as interested in its mechanics, the Fallout-inspired systems of this mod create a cool crossover with Grand Theft Auto 5, creating an exciting blend of genres you may not have expected.
