James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
There's no denying that the Fallout franchise is one of the most desirable IPs in the world right now, with the Prime Video adaptation bringing the story to an entirely new audience. That said, it's all about the video game entries for the most part, and we haven't had one of those since 2015, over ten years ago.
As far as we knew, that wasn't likely to change any time soon either, with Bethesda almost entirely focused on producing the next Elder Scrolls game, a series which hasn't had a new release since 2011. Interestingly, things are starting to change though, and it seems like Fallout could be far more of a priority moving forward than it otherwise might have been.
As first reported by The Information (via GamesRadar+), new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma could be planning to pump a whole raft of new money into the company's most iconic first-party franchises. In practice, this means additional funding for Bethesda, to invest in accelerating the new Fallout game, as well as Halo Studios (formerly 343 Industries).
The idea here, of course, would be that spending more money on those big releases would enable to them to hire more developers and shorten the overall timeline for release. That could see the next Fallout game arrive a lot sooner than it currently would, and that's obviously something we can all get behind, in principle.
There's obviously a lot of question marks about the execution and whether the plan will work as intended, but the reality remains that the time period needed for development has become a little ridiculous. Given how far along The Elder Scrolls VI is supposedly, we could easily be looking at a release gap of 20+ years to the last game in the series, Skyrim.
As well as clearly being a bad thing for fans who just want to have a good time, it makes no business sense for Xbox, who have invested a lot of money in the company and will be looking for a return. If extra money means they can push Elder Scrolls out sooner before pivoting to a full focus on Fallout, that could easily be financially worthwhile for the gaming giant.
For now, all we can do is sit, watch these things happen, and hope for the best. We all want more Fallout games though, so if it takes a little more money to get us there, then that's obviously something the whole community would be behind, and a potential easy win for new head honcho Sharma.
