With The Elder Scrolls 6 apparently still at least a couple of years away, hearing anything about a potential Fallout 5 from Bethesda seemed highly unlikely. But in a wide-ranging update about the future of the studio, the makers of the post-apocalyptic RPG series revealed that a sequel is actively in the works. That's not all.

Fallout 5 is still in early pre-production, Bethesda says. Some fans may also not be thrilled to hear that the next Fallout game will be made in Creation Engine 3. That's the same engine that powered Starfield back in 2023, and the same toolset that Bethesda is using to build The Elder Scrolls 6. In that sense, continuing to use its proprietary tool isn't a shocker. But if Fallout isn't likely until sometime after The Elder Scrolls 6, fans might've hoped that Bethesda would leave Creation Engine 3 behind — or at least, develop a better version of it.

Starfield, to its credit, is a much more stable experience than your typical Bethesda release. Yet Fallout 5 now risks looking dated whenever it does come out whenever it comes out, particularly when it comes to facial expressions. But, hey... Fallout 5 modding inadvertently confirmed?

The Fallout 5 announcement is also accompanied by the news that Bethesda is working on a remaster of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. The studio also confirmed that it is teaming up with the folks at Obsidian Entertainment to work on a new Fallout game as well; it does not appear to be Fallout 5. Bethesda also reminded fans that a TV show based on popular mobile game Fallout Shelter is currently in development.

"Fallout is one of our biggest priorities today," Bethesda said. "Fallout 5 remains our long-range destination, and we have multiple Fallout projects in active development right now."

Despite the optimistic tone of the update, developers at Bethesda who remain at the studio post-layoffs claim that things are in disarray. A report claimed that not only is The Elder Scrolls 6 in danger of being delayed, Bethesda's quality assurance department was also "decimated."
