James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
The Fallout series make up some of the greatest RPGs of all time, and that's a reputation that was earned across years of stellar releases. That said, it's no secret that the games are not in a great place by now, with most of the burden for the franchise's popularity being carried by the excellent Prime Video adaptation, and wider third party product releases.
Though Bethesda is supporting various games in the series in different ways, there's only so far that a new physical release of New Vegas is going to carry them, when all fans really want is the next direct sequel. Now, it seems the community is really starting to run thin on patience, after years without any positive updates.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post citing an interview from The Game Business, in which Bethesda's head honcho Todd Howard confirmed he is aware of how unhappy fans are at the lack of a new game, but that unhappiness is the reason why they are continuing to support older games.
As you might expect, that wasn't really enough for fans in the responses, who were quick to share their extensive thoughts on the matter. "I'd agree 1. If this support was substantial for Fallout 4 (literally get a small team or an external dev to make an actual expansion while we wait). I know it's not the same but Quake and Doom get new episode packs when they get re-released, Fallout gets some naff creation club content. 2. The support didn't make the games worse. F4 Anniversary is terrible," one comment read.
While another added, "'Supporting older titles.' Here’s a $60 version of Fallout 4 that includes some community-made modes. Here’s another version of Skyrim for $60 that’s runs at 30fps and has the input lag of an Xbox Kinect… I’m over Bethesda, I have zero faith in TES6 or Fallout 5."
"Yeah it’s really disappointing that Starfield wasted away years of development and, even more disappointing, Microsoft sat on the IP until seemingly now with multiple projects in development. Hopefully, they realize they can make some money off the franchise instead of just updates," a third said.
The only potential ray of hope for Fallout fans is that Obsidian has seemingly now been given the all clear to make another game in the series, with new Xbox head Asha Sharma seemingly unhappy at the lack of releases for their biggest IPs. Hopefully that means a future filled with Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Halo games, but that really does remain to be seen.
