Face It, Demon Slayer's Weakest Hashira Deserves Way More Credit Than You Give Them

2 months ago 31

When discussing the strongest Hashira in Demon Slayer, fans are quick to name Gyomei Himejima and Sanemi Shinazugawa as their strength makes them the clear choice for most powerful. However, brute force alone doesn’t dictate what makes a great Demon Slayer. This is proven through Shinobu Kocho and her contributions to the Demon Slayer Corps.

Despite being one of the most skilled members, Shinobu is often overlooked in discussions about the best Hashira. She may be weaker in comparison to more physically imposing Hashira, but to dismiss her as ineffective is a massive mistake. Beyond combat skills, Shinobu’s intelligence, resolve, and adaptability make her the most vital Demon Slayer during the final battle in the Infinity Castle arc.

Shinobu Has a Unique Combat Style and Intricate Knowledge of Poisons

Shinobu’s Unpredictability Makes Her a Dangerous Adversary

Shinobu’s combat style is unlike any of the other Hashira. She relies on speed, precision, and a deep understanding of poisons rather than brute strength. Since she lacks the physical power to decapitate demons, she compensates by infusing her blade with wisteria-based toxins to gain the upper hand. This approach makes her not only unpredictable, but also an extremely dangerous enemy to contend with. While other Hashira overwhelm demons with their strength, Shinobu follows through with a very different method, proving her intelligence and adaptability.

Admit It: Demon Slayer Really Gave Inosuke Some of Anime's Best Plot Armor

Inosuke from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is one of the most plot armor protected characters in modern anime, and here is why.

Beyond using poisons as a weapon, Shinobu Kocho has proven herself to be an expert in medical science and chemistry. She experiments relentlessly, creating new poisons designed to be effective against high-level demons and target their regenerative abilities. Her knowledge also extends to antidotes and treatments, making her an indispensable asset to the Demon Slayer Corps. Without her innovations, many slayers would have succumbed to demon venom or life-threatening injuries.

Her Backstory Shaped Her Determination to Destroy Muzan

Beneath Her Mild-Mannered Demeanor, Shinobu Has Always Had a Deep-Seated Rage Toward Demons

Shinobu’s drive to annihilate demons stems from her past being marked by loss and tragedy, like many others. As a child, she witnessed her parents’ murder at the hands of demons, a moment that ignited her hatred for Muzan and his creations. This trauma then deepened with the loss of her older sister, Kanae, who was killed by Doma the Upper Moon Two. Unlike Shinobu, Kanae believed in the possibility of peaceful coexistence between humans and demons, a dream that Shinobu secretly resented but kept to herself. Then, upon Kanae’s death, Shinobu’s determination and hatred of demons were only strengthened.

Shinobu’s mission has always been a personal matter, and she never sought glory or recognition. Instead, she set her focus on the destruction of all demons. This single-minded drive manifested in her unwavering commitment to her research and methods to ensure that she was always one step closer to avenging her sister. Beneath her composed and, at times, playful attitude lies a deep, simmering rage that is nearly all-consuming, driving her to take increasingly dangerous risks until she finally comes face to face with Doma in the Infinity Castle.

Her Role in the War Against Muzan Was Critical to the Corps’ Success

Without Shinobu, the Final Battle Could Have Suffered From a Very Different Outcome

During the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji, Shinobu’s contributions were essential to the Corps’ success. Knowing full well that she lacked the physical might to take on Muzan, she came up with a strategy that weaponized her greatest asset—her intelligence. By filling her body with lethal doses of wisteria, she turns herself into a living trap for any demon who devours her. Shinobu willingly put her life on the line in order to severely and secretly weaken her enemy. This self-sacrificial plan ultimately proved critical as Doma unknowingly absorbed an immense concentration of the toxin, leading to his downfall.

While others fought against other Upper Moons, Shinobu did her part by single-handedly weakening one of the most powerful demons under Muzan’s command, shifting the battle in the Corps’ favor. Beyond this, the Hashira's work alongside Tamayo created the Anti-Kibutsuji drug, which played a vital role in Muzan’s downfall. This four-stage drug weakened, aged, and ultimately destroyed Muzan at the cellular level. Although Shinobu never directly crossed swords with Muzan, she was instrumental in his defeat, making her the most crucial of all the Hashira.
