A group of veteran Fallout 4 modders have just added a whole new town to its wasteland, offering another place to pop into for some trading and questing as you roam post-apocalyptic Boston. The place, dubbed Detour, looks set to act as a "new quest hub" that'll grow via new additions from its creators over time.

Drawing a bit of inspiration from Fallout 3's Arefu and Highway Town from Fallout 76's Burning Springs update, Detour's a settlement up on one of the ruined freeways which loom above parts of the wasteland. It's not too far from vanilla starting location Sanctuary, near the map marker for Bedford Station, so it's an ideal place to visit early on in a playthrough.

The town's home to voiced citizens running shops, offering to rent you a room, or keeping the peace. There's a ghoul sheriff and a mayor who seem prime candidates to offer up a quest or two, with the former's digs indicating he's got work for bounty hunters, and a thief named Randy looking like he might have something for you to do if you spring him from the can. Plus, there's a house you can buy if you fancy moving in permanently.

All in all, there are over a dozen voiced characters in Detour with more than 600 lines of dialogue. "This is kind of intended to also be a platform that I add to over time, like a new quest hub," primary creator Pig wrote of Detour in a pinned post. That sounds very promising, given the modders behind it have a long history of adding detailed new quests to Fallout 4 as part of what they've named the Commonwealth Story Expansion Project.

Deadly cults, underground wars, post-apocalyptic detective work, and Brotherhood of Steel drama have all served as themes for their previous quest mods, so who knows what sorts of adventures Detour could factor into.

If you fancy having a wander around the new town, you'll need to own Fallout 4's Nuka World DLC. There's also an optional patch which allows Detour to work with the Reputation mod, if you want some New Vegas-esque faction relationship dynamics lobbed into your playthrough.
