Everything Star Wars Has Revealed About Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order In Canon

5 days ago 6

While it hasn't yet had the spotlight, Star Wars has revealed many things about Luke Skywalker's new Jedi Order in canon. In assisting the launch of the new canon, Star Wars: The Force Awakens began its opening crawl with "Luke Skywalker has vanished." This made it so that Luke's Jedi Order wasn't featured in the sequels at all, but was instead destroyed before them.

Since then, Luke's Jedi Order has appeared in various places, notably first being pictured in flashbacks in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Frustratingly, however, it's never been the subject of the story. More and more tidbits about Luke's Jedi Temple and Academy have been revealed in random places, painting a scattered yet fascinating picture of what Luke Skywalker's new Jedi Order really looked like in canon. Here's everything we know about it so far.

Luke's New Jedi Order Was Based On The Planet Ossus

Ancient Jedi Library World

For the first few years of knowing of its existence, fans had no idea what planet Luke's canon Jedi Temple was actually on. This was until the 2022 novel Shadow of the Sith by Adam Christopher, which acts as a prequel of sorts to The Force Awakens. This novel did a lot of heavy lifting for developing Luke's Jedi Order, and revealed that it was built on Ossus.

Luke Skywalker's Ossus Jedi Temple Is One Of The Best Star Wars Legends Easter Eggs In Canon

Instead of taking the easy road, Star Wars put Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple on Ossus, a planet with lots of Legends history and stories.

This construction was actually seen, as was Ossus, in The Book of Boba Fett before Shadow of the Sith. Luke used ant droids to build the first dome-like structure of his Jedi Temple, and soon after trained Grogu inside of it. The planet Ossus was notable itself for being an ancient Jedi library world from Star Wars Legends in the Old Republic era.

There Were Multiple Generations Of Students

Jedi Knights & Padawans

Luke's Jedi Temple was built around 9 ABY, 5 years after the death of the Emperor and Darth Vader, but he didn't start formally training students until 15 ABY. It was destroyed in 28 ABY, 13 years later. This means that there was enough time for multiple groups of new students to be taught at the Jedi Academy on Ossus.

This is verified by Shadow of the Sith, which takes place in 21 ABY and features a teenage Ben Solo helping train a group of younger students. Ben Solo was part of the first class, meaning that there were at least two age groups present at the temple. Star Wars #50 by Charles Soule and Madibek Musabekov featured a scene of Luke training Ben Solo, and revealed that Ben may have been a fully fledged Jedi Knight before turning to the dark side, meaning this could've been true for other students too.

The Jedi Traditions Of Old

Since the release of the prequel trilogy, many fans have clung to the idea that the Jedi of the late Republic era were flawed. Their strict views on attachment, family, and more have given fans a reason to question them. Whether they were right or not, however, Luke Skywalker, in restoring the Order, followed in their footsteps.

This is significantly different from Luke's New Jedi Order in Star Wars Legends, which was largely established before the release of the prequels, and therefore couldn't give Luke knowledge of these nonexistent strict rules. Luke's canon Jedi Order, however, maintained the prequel Jedi's views on attachments, as the lone master tried to re-establish the Jedi tradition with help only coming from the likes of Jocasta Nu's holocrons and Ahsoka Tano herself, who was a Jedi Padawan during the prequel era.

Grogu Was Luke's First Student On Ossus

Very shortly after establishing his Temple and Academy on Ossus, Luke trained the young Grogu in the surrounding landscape. This made the Jedi youngling Luke's first official student, other than his own sister Leia. As confirmed in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Luke trained his sister in the way of the Jedi on the planet Ajan Kloss, an old Alderaanian safe world.

Star Wars' Next Movie Needs To Address One Massive Timeline Problem At Last

One aspect of Yoda and Grogu's species currently makes absolutely no sense, and the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu movie must address it.

After Leia, Grogu became Luke's first official student over 4 years later, when he was more prepared to train students. Before training Grogu and settling on Ossus, Luke searched the galaxy, researching the Jedi Order's history and learning as much as he possibly could before teaching full classes. It was during this time that Luke found a lot of the Jedi artifacts and ancient texts that he used at his Academy.

Luke Had Many Students He Recruited During Travels With Ben Solo

Master & Apprentice, Luke & Ben

During the early days of Luke's Jedi Academy, Ben Solo was his central apprentice, and the two traveled the galaxy searching for Jedi history and artifacts. On these trips, Luke would sometimes encounter other Force-sensitive kids, to whom he would offer a spot at his Academy. This was the main method of recruiting students for the nascent Jedi Master.

Some of Ben's classmates became his close friends over their years of serving and training together. The only named students we know of are three: Tai and Voe, two humans, and a Quarren named Hennix. Beyond this, Luke had many other students that fans haven't met yet in any other stories.

Luke's Jedi Students Trained With Holocrons

Jocasta Nu's Jedi Archives

As seen in The Rise of Kylo Ren comics by Charles Soule and Will Sliney, Luke's students often trained with holocrons. These Jedi information-storing devices were accessed by the Force, and contained teachings of Jedi and other Force-teachers from the past. Many of these holocrons came from the Jedi Archives on Coruscant, saved by librarian Jocasta Nu.

Darth Maul's unity of Jedi and Sith holocrons was rare, and a Star Wars theory suggests they might offer access to a key Force vergence.

In the 2017 run of Darth Vader, also by Charles Soule, Jocasta Nu was revealed to have survived the Jedi Purge and Order 66, and gradually recovered pieces of the Archives, hiding them in a cave. Luke recovered this cache, implementing the information found inside for his own training purposes.

Ben Solo Destroyed The Temple & Luke's Academy

The Force Storm & Ben's Fall

All of this led up to one fateful night in 28 ABY, where Luke Skywalker looked into the mind of his nephew and apprentice, Ben Solo. Luke had seen reasons for massive concern during Ben's training, and saw fit to see the boy's thoughts – and saw that it was much worse than he could have imagined. A terrified Luke ignited his lightsaber on instinct, and woke Ben up. The terrified young man thought Luke had come to finish the job, and struck back.

Star Wars Fixes A Major Problem With Luke Skywalker's Jedi Temple

Luke's Jedi Temple, first seen in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, has had one big problem since 2021, and a recent comic has completely fixed it.

The two clashed sabers, and Ben collapsed his hut on Luke. He then summoned a Force-storm with his anger, destroying Luke's Jedi Temple and bringing to an end the era of the new Jedi Order. Ben retreated to Supreme Leader Snoke, fought the last few students that had survived, and fully fell to the dark side, while Luke went into self-imposed exile. This tragic night then set the stage for the next chapter of the Star Wars saga.
