Tracker may be a series that follows Colter Shaw (Justin Hartley) as he locates missing people, but the standout character of the series thus far has been his older brother, Russell Shaw. Russell, who's introduced to the series long before his physical entrance, is Colter's older brother who left the family behind after his father's death, which feels suspicious to Colter. Throughout the early episodes of the series, Colter's wary of his older brother, and even once he appears on screen, it's clear the title character doesn't entirely trust his often absent older brother with anything about his nomadic life.

As Tracker continued, however, the draw of Ackles was simply too strong. Ackles, who's been consistently working the past few years after the end of the long-running Supernatural, makes a splash on Tracker. Charming, enigmatic, and constantly flirting with Colter's potential love interest and lawyer Reenie Green (Fiona Rene), Russell has his issues, but he's always ready to take on a case with his brother. Heavily tied to the long-running plot surrounding their father's death, Russell has found himself to be indefensible to the larger story on Tracker, even if some of his current CBS episodes are better than others.

"Ontological Shock"

Season 2, Episode 2

Though it's not the first episode of the season, Tracker season 2 episode 2, "Ontological Shock", feels like the season opener. Tracker's weakest season was its second, but starting out with Russell joining the team for an episode was a strong choice for the CBS hit. In the episode, Colter's team finds that it's been far too long for their liking since they heard from the titular tracker, so Reenie chooses to call in some assistance. With Russell's background in secret government work, he feels like the right choice to slip into a somewhat sticky situation for his brother's safety.

Throughout the episode, Russell has to work to find Colter, which offers a cute nod to the show's premise. Despite Colter being a tracker for others, his brother's able to sniff him out quickly. Once Russell locates his missing brother and saves the day, it's clear Colter's a little weirded out by his brother's connections to the larger team. While the story behind Tracker season 2 episode 2 isn't bad, this episode is Russell's weakest appearance. The stakes feel too low, and Russell is only utilized as a reminder of who he is, rather than building more into his character.

"Leverage"

Season 3, Episode 2

As the second half of the Tracker season 3 opener, this episode brings another fun Colter and Russell team up into the spotlight, but the resolution is a little too clunky. When Tracker season 3 chose to bring Ackles back for a two-part season opener, it felt clear that the series knew what it was doing. Russell has quickly become one of the most interesting characters on the young series, and his return could only mean big things for the storyline surrounding the Shaw family tree. Thankfully, Russell's appearance in the back half of the opener didn't fail to deliver.

While the first half of the two-parter sees Russell and Colter brings the brothers together and sees them debrief, the second actually sees them working together in a genuine way. Russell's involvement feels somewhat lighter than it did in the premiere, which is disappointing, but his charm and charisma make up for a slight lack of screen time. Ultimately, this episode suffers because it doesn't feature enough Russell. Rather than utilizing Ackles in as much of the episode as possible, it feels like Russell is only brought in for a specific piece of the episode's overall puzzle.

"The Process"

Season 3, Episode 1

As the opener of the season, Tracker season 3 episode 1, "The Process," had a lot of work to do outside the Colter and Russell storyline, which is why it's so impressive with how much it actually does with the brothers together. Russell, who shows up in the episode mid bar brawl and gets punched in the face, is the ever-charming man he always is, but seeing Colter debrief with his brother cracks the facade a bit. Russell cares so deeply about his brother and about their family that it always feels clear when he shifts gears and truly listens.

As Colter explains the information that he's found out about their father's death and the circumstances around it, Russell goes from being a casual part of the story to an incredibly active participant. When Colter finally gets the chance to share with Russell, he becomes a lighter person, which is great for viewers to see. In getting the chance to see Russell shoulder some of the pain of their past, Colter feels like a better character. Ultimately, the Tracker season 3 opener allows him to be help Colter be a better version of himself.

"Off The Books"

Season 1, Episode 12

As far as introductions go, Tracker does a fantastic job in introducing the brother that Colter's spent the first season half-talking about. When Russell first comes into the picture, it's clear to see that things haven't been going well in his relationship with Colter. While we as viewers know some of the lore, actually seeing the pair interact creates a whole new layer of information. With the pair being estranged, and with Colter being the one putting up a boundary, Russell's entry point to the story comes with a lot of baggage, some that viewers didn't exactly expect.

When Russell enlists Colter to help him find an old army buddy, the brothers have no choice but to get along. While Colter seems like he might try to ice his brother out for the duration of the case, the pair actually find themselves having a good time together. The slow building chemistry between Ackles and Hartley is wonderful to watch, and their ability to move from a place of difficulty to comfort throughout the episode's run is a masterclass. While the episode only reveals so much information about Russell, Tracker season 1 episode 12 is a genuinely great story.

"Chrono Stasis"

Season 3, Episode 21

In Tracker season 3's penultimate episode, Russell returns in a way that changes the entirety of Colter's story by season's end. While Russell spent the first episodes of the season promising to go dig up information surrounding their father's mysterious death, when he comes back to Colter, he's ready to explore more of the loose ends. Colter and Russell head out to talk to a woman who may have more information, but as they discover bigger details about what happened, there's more danger involved. Neither Shaw brother is afraid of what faces them, but unpacking the past has a price.

While Russell isn't a character who's afraid to poke the bear when it's time, he's always very protective of his younger brother. Seeing Ackles in a role where he's a caring but confident older brother is reminiscent of his past roles, and he does it incredibly well. Throughout the episode, Russell moves between an intense need to know more about their family mystery and a protective older sibling who's doing what he can to take the burden. Tracker season 3's penultimate episode sets up an incredible finale, and an even more thought-provoking season as things come to an end.

"The Best One"

Season 3, Episode 22

In the final episode of season 3, which is both one of Tracker's best and easily the best appearance of Russell thus far, viewers get the chance to see every side of the eldest Shaw sibling. With Russell being missing in action at the top of the episode, he's quickly brought back into the story and it's made clear just how different he and Colter are. While Russell and Colter find themselves dealing with some classified government information that leaves them unable to step back from their fact-finding mission, the way Tracker bends their dynamic for the work is flawless.

Rebounding from chasing the threads of a case and dealing with harrowing injuries in the process, Russell gains some information that he doesn't share with Colter during the season 3 finale, which sets up the next path of the elder Shaw's story. Russell, who has more exploring to do about a lead on Colter's childhood, asks Reenie to keep things quiet, but overall, his work in Tracker season 3's finale is enough to ensure he'll be back next season. The intensity of Tracker season 3's finale makes the episode a can't-miss, and the best that Russell Shaw has to offer.
