Sci-fi movies make up one of Hollywood's biggest markets, and there are many exciting releases to look forward to in 2024. The best sci-fi movies allow viewers to explore vast and imaginative worlds, providing a sense of escapism. 2023 saw several successful sci-fi movies debut, from franchise installments like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to the original film The Creator. 2024 has already had an upward trend for the genre, with far more releases slated.
2024 will or has already seen book adaptations, video game adaptations, original sci-fi films, and the return of major franchises like Alien, Planet of the Apes, Godzilla, and Mad Max. These movies are set to be directed by some of the best talent in the film industry, including Denis Villeneuve. However, many 2024 movies have been delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. While many of 2024's films ended up set, several were pushed back again. Nevertheless, 2024's sci-fi lineup made it a solid year for sci-fi films.

On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.
Cast Rachel Zegler , Alicia Silverstone , Julian Dennison , Jaeden Martell , Eduardo Franco , Mason Gooding , Miles Robbins , Tim Heidecker
Release Date March 9, 2024
Runtime 93 Minutes
In a sci-fi movie that seems to be like Superbad meets Maximum Overdrive, Jaeden Martell (Stephen King's It) stars as Eli, a teenager who really wants to get to spend time with his crush, Laura (West Side Story's Rachel Zegler). He goes to a party where he knows she will be, but he becomes dejected when he sees her kissing someone else. However, things go bad when midnight hits, and all the technology comes to life and starts to kill humanity.
Y2K sees the teens fighting for their lives against household appliances, computer technology, and random robots. It also seems full of nostalgia for the late 1990s and early 2000s, both in music and visual design. The cast remains impressive, with Julian Dennison (Deadpool), Daniel Zolghadri (Eighth Grade), Lachlan Watson (Chucky), and Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things). Y2K premiered at the South by Southwest festival and will hit theaters on December 6, 2024.
3 Kraven The Hunter
December 13, 2024
Kraven the Hunter is the fourth movie in Sony's Spider-Man Universe, set in the same Marvel continuity as Tom Hardy's Venom and Jared Leto's Morbius. Director J.C. Chandor
Release Date December 13, 2024
In what is the final officially scheduled Marvel Sony movie set in the Spider-Man universe, Kraven the Hunter is finally coming to the big screen. Much like Madame Web earlier in 2024, Kraven the Hunter was shot in 2022 but was held and postponed multiple times before its eventual release in December 2024. The movie stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron) as Sergei Kravinoff, an almost supernatural hunter who seeks to find the next largest target to hunt.
With Venom: The Last Dance fairing better than Madame Web , Sony might be looking at a small success before its return to Spider-Man in the MCU.
However, it seems this film changes things to make Kraven the son of a dangerous man who ends up targeting evil men and using his intense hunting skills and supernatural abilities in a tale of revenge. Other Spider-Man characters appearing in the movie are Chameleon (Fred Hechinger), Rhino (Alessandro Nivola), and Foreigner (Christopher Abbott). With Venom: The Last Dance fairing better than Madame Web, Sony might be looking at a small success before its return to Spider-Man in the MCU.

1 The Electric State
March 14, 2025
Michelle, an orphan in a robot-filled alternate 1990s, discovers her brother may still be alive after a mysterious robot visit. Teaming up with a smuggler and his sidekick, she ventures into the Exclusion Zone, only to uncover sinister forces behind her brother's fate.
Release Window 2025
Following the mixed reviews of Adam Sandler's Spaceman, Netflix has another major upcoming sci-fi release — The Electric State. The Electric State is a film adaptation of Simon Stålenhag's graphic novel of the same name. Anthony and Joe Russo, the minds behind numerous successful Marvel films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Endgame, directed the upcoming movie (which doesn't have a release date yet as of the writing of this article).
The plot of The Electric State revolves around a girl and a robot setting out to find her missing brother.
The Electric State has an enormously talented cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Brian Cox, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, and more. Some stars (like Esposito and Mackie) voice the various robot characters in The Electric State. Meanwhile, actors like Brown, Pratt, and Quan play humans in the sci-fi movie. The film was initially slated for a 2024 release and though it has been pushed back until March 2025, it's worth mentioning for sci-fi fans.
