The Robins exist deep into the DNA of superhero comics, and as such, each one needs to be really special. If they aren't they won't live up to a legacy that has lasted longer than just about any person walking this planet. And, by ensuring that each person who has taken on the mantle brings something special to it, the writers, artists, and editors at DC have kept the legacy alive.
Dick Grayson Is The Leader
The original and, in the eyes of many readers, the GOAT, Dick Grayson didn't just set the standard for future Robins, he set the standard for all teen sidekicks. Grayson spent four decades wearing the little green shorts, but has spent the last four decades as his own man, going by Nightwing. Through it all, Dick Grayson has not only shown that past trauma doesn't have to be what defines a hero — something Batman could stand to learn — he's also shown what a good leader looks like.
As both Robin and Nightwing, Dick Grayson has led heroes into countless battles as the head of the Teen Titans and the Titans. With Dick's expertise in strategy (thanks to Batman) along with his endless optimism and heart (thanks to Superman), it could be argued that there is not a better leader in the DC universe. There's a reason why, during Dark Crisis, every hero looked to Nightwing. And while other Robins have been leaders, none have been as respected or as confident in the role as Dick Grayson.
Jason Todd Is The Independent Thinker
A good sidekick needs to know how to take orders and follow commands from their mentor. That is something Jason Todd never really got a handle on. The second hero to take on the job of being Batman's buddy, Jason struggled to control his emotions, but, more than that, he really can't stand authority figures. If Jason Todd is driving, and the GPS tells him to take a right, his first instinct will be to go left, just to prove he's his own man.
This kind of thinking did lead to Jason getting his head smashed in with a crowbar by the Joker, but that didn't make him change his ways. No, Jason Todd was not a good sidekick. But it is because, even from a young age, Jason Todd was his own man, and he wasn't going to let anyone, not even the Dark Knight, tell him who he should be.
Tim Drake Is All Heart
Every Robin has had some good deduction skills, but only one Robin figured out who Batman really is. Not only that, but all Tim had to do was see Batman on TV to know that a) the last Robin was dead, and b) Batman was out of his mind with grief. Tim took it upon himself to be Robin not because he had something to prove, or had suffered a traumatic experience like the others, but because he saw someone else suffering and knew he could help.
Tim's empathetic and analytical mind continues to make him stand out from the other Robins. He uses empathy to better understand the people around him and the cases he works, and has a talent for noticing things that no one else, not even the World's Greatest Detective, picks up on. Even Batman has admitted that Tim is the best Robin because he does it for others, never for himself.
Stephanie Brown Is Determined
Stephanie Brown wouldn't take no for an answer. She willed her way into being Robin when Batman had absolutely no interest in taking on a new sidekick. The Caped Crusader didn't think she was ready for the responsibility that comes with being his sidekick, but Stephanie vehemently disagreed. Turns out, Batman was right. As Robin, Stephanie started a massive gang war that engulfed Gotham and got herself killed. She came back though, so it's all fine.

Seventeen years after Batman recruited Damian Wayne as the fifth Robin, DC just introduced a radical new take on the hero identity.
While Stephanie wasn't Robin for long, her tenure showed that she isn't a hero who will walk away from a challenge. These days, she shares the mantle of Batgirl with Cassandra Cain, and the two of them work as a team, often separate from the rest of the very large Bat-Family. Through it all, Stephanie continues to do what she does best — saving people — no matter who or what stands in her way.
Damian Wayne Is Intense
The son of Batman and Talia al Ghul, Damian Wayne is the only Robin to share DNA with the boss. And while he may be a nepo baby, that doesn't mean Damian hasn't earned the right to be his dad's sidekick. Trained from birth by the League of Assassins, Damian brings a level of intensity to being a hero that the other Robins could never dream of. That intensity — along with an ego the size of Mogo the Living Planet — can make Damian hard to deal with sometimes, but it also makes him an amazing hero in his own right.
Damian's intensity often leaves Batman's previous and current sidekicks cold. In some cases, like how Damian tried to kill Tim Drake when they first met, makes some sense, but for others, like Jason Todd, it really comes down to Damian never holding back what he thinks or feels. This goes for animals, too, but in that case, Damian's intense feelings are those of love. A vegetarian, Damian has introduced a cow to the Bat-Family, and even had his own dragon bat. Damian is too intense to lead a team or get along with most of the Bat-Family, but he has just the right amount of intensity to take over the mantle of the Bat one day.
