One of the things that makes a game like Dragon Age: The Veilguard be a memorable adventure is the emotional connection and immersive qualities that can come from deep character story arcs and relationships with those characters. Building relationships, whether friendship or romance, with party companions and strengthening alliances within various factions has been an important part of all entries in the Dragon Age series since the beginning. This allows it to truly lean into the roleplaying portion of the RPG and gives more weight and emphasis to the choices that players make while they are interacting with these NPCs.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard has seven companions that join the player-controlled character, Rook, in taking on the challenge of protecting Thedas from the growing threat of the Blight and its accompanying destruction. These companions each have strong backstories and very different personalities, providing the cozy group with a feeling of being a bit of a ragtag collection. Each one is a different mix of the three classes available in the game, but with their own unique skill trees, so players can tweak their abilities to make them useful in combat. Outside of combat, however, players can take the time to build intimate bonds that can take a romantic turn.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard continues the story of the Dragon Age series with stunning graphics and deep narratives for large and small quests.
Naturally, the key to building these relationships comes down to strengthening the bond between Rook and each NPC. Rook can romance any of the seven companions, regardless of gender or race, but only if their relationship points are high enough. During conversations between Rook and the companions, there are often choices which may cause a character to either approve or disapprove of what Rook is saying or doing. Additionally, relationships can increase by taking certain teammates along on missions to spend more time with them, and, of course, completing the individual character story arc of that companion.
7 Lace Harding
A Dwarf Scout Of The Inquisition
Lace Harding is the only teammate in Dragon Age: The Veilguard who comes to the game from its predecessor, Dragon Age: Inquisition. Her role in Inquisition was much more limited, though, having been a scout that gave reports when players entered a region. Now, for Veilguard, she steps up to the much more important role of partner and companion to Rook, and is the first of the companions to be by Rook's side at the early stages of the game.
After Rook has entered a committed relationship with someone, many of the other companions can find romance with other members of the party.
Harding may be a tough dwarven scout with some incredible bow-wielding skills and a unique and unexpected magical power, but she is much more than that. Harding is a bit of the girl-next-door, the redheaded girl from Ferelden. She loves nature, animals, and adventure and has a big heart. Her kindness, positivity, and strength blend together to be an anchor for the team in many situations.
She may be a tough rogue, but Harding is dealing with some heavy personal struggles in The Veilguard, and could use a supportive and caring Rook at her side.
6 Lucanis Dellamorte
A Human Assassin Of The Antivan Crows
As an expert assassin with good looks and a come-hither accent, Lucanis has a lot of mystery to him that can be intriguing for any player to want to learn a little more of. A powerful member of his family business, the Antivan Crows, he would rather be out on a job than running an organization. He has a strong focus on work and completing the contract given him, and will not stop until he has done whatever is needed.
Although not exactly a bad boy, Lucanis struggles with his own demons in ways that go beyond the average person's amount. He is a strong mage who can deftly achieve swift kills, and has earned himself the title of the Demon of Vyrantium, even before some of his circumstances changed in a way that gave more weight to that title.
Between his inner turmoil and threats to his family and their faction known as Antivan Crows, Lucanis has much to distract from Rook's ultimate mission, but perhaps Rook can also be the key to helping him find ways to ground himself.
5 Taash
A Qunari Dragon Hunter Of The Lords Of Fortune
Taash may not struggle with the same types of demons that Lucanis has, but they have their own inner turmoil to face and decisions to be made. Taash's personal journey of discovering who they are is a powerful one, and could possibly hit a bit close to home for some players. Taash has long fought against being the person that their mother wants them to be, and is just learning what they want in life as they are simultaneously attempting to help Rook with tracking down blighted dragons.
Taash is a strong warrior and dragon hunter with a secret ability that has put a mark on their back. Unfortunately, Taash also comes with a quick temper and a heavy dose of anger issues. Their personal story arc is an emotional roller coaster, but can be one of the most touching in the game.
4 Neve Gallus
Human Private Detective Working With The Shadow Dragons
Neve Gallus has a cynical and jaded outlook on life, but she has also become a well-known and respected private detective and heroine within Minrathous. Her connections with the organization known as the Shadow Dragons can bring a lot of information, but she isn't solely sworn to them either and can reach out to people everywhere for details on situations. Neve is one of the first companions that Rook meets and is an integral part, along with Harding, in recruiting the rest of the team.
As a mage, she focuses on ice powers, similar to her sometimes icy disposition. Hidden beneath the negativity and cynicism is a heart of gold, and she is someone who can feel deeply passionate about the things and people she loves. Her friendship with Bellara throughout the game is a sweet one that shows just how kind Neve can be.
She has a hard time truly letting her guard down, however. So once Neve begins to trust someone, it can be hard to get a second chance if they make a mistake and hurt her.
3 Emmrich Volkarin
Human Necromancer Of The Mourn Watch
As an older necromancer with a flair for the dramatic, Emmrich may not seem as though he should rank very high on a list of romantic options. His job and heavy focus on death and the deceased can belie his true kindness and cheerful attitude. As Rook gets to know Emmrich, his thoughtfulness, sensitivity, and passion comes out more and more. He is serious about protecting innocents and is interested in every soul, whether they are living or dead.
Romancing Emmrich can be a uniquely beautiful and serene experience, with sweet moments of Rook and Emmrich talking about life and death and exploring Emmrich's past. The depth of his character is impressive, especially in a group so full of intricate characters already.
As if Emmrich wasn't already sweet enough to steal Rook's heart, he also comes with his skeletal assistant, Manfred who is as hilarious as he is macabre. Once a spirit wisp, Emmrich found that Manfred had a very curious demeanor and so Emmrich crafted a special skeletal body for Manfred to occupy. This cheerful little hissing servant enjoys playing games of rock, paper, scissors with Rook and is happy to assist if they can.
2 Bellara Lutare
Elf Mage With The Veil Jumpers
Bellara is quirky, romantic, and tries hard to have an upbeat personality that is constantly focused on others around her. She is curious about the Fade and all the ancient secrets of Elvhenan and has dedicated most of her life to learning more about the magical technologies in the land. Her strength as a companion is clear in the darkness and unknown of the Fade tears and magical disruptions, but her value to Rook as a romantic partner could prove even more important.
She approaches much of the world around her with a childlike wonder, but can feel deeply when the actions of others, past and present, are not in line with her values. Bellara is always looking to help Rook be spared from some of the problems happening, showing that her loving heart is even bigger than her hair bun.
1 Davrin, And Assan, His Young Griffin
Elf Warrior Of The Grey Wardens
Davrin is a bold, yet charming, member of the Grey Wardens who are sworn to protect Thedas from darkspawn and the Blight. Raised in a Dalish clan, he wanted more adventure and purpose to his life than that simple family could provide. He has become well known for his skills as a monster hunter, and is proud of his role in life. With Rook, a spark of love can break through his tough exterior and reveal the kind and romantic man he can be.
Through unfortunate circumstances in his work with the Grey Wardens, Davrin became the sole caretaker of a young, orphaned griffon whom he named Assan. Assan is easily one of the most adorable creatures to ever exist in a Dragon Age game, and it would be hard not to want to become closer to Davrin just for access to the mischievous and surprising griffon.
Davrin, like any of the companions, can be romanced by any gender or race that players want their Rook to be. Each has unique storylines for their personal arcs, but also holds special cutscenes and narrative specifically focused on a budding romance with Rook. It can be a tough choice, and once Rook chooses to be in a committed relationship with one partner, all other companions are no longer available for flirtation in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
