Mutant hero Emma Frost has a wild new costume, as X-Men reimagines the 'White Queen' in totally unexpected circumstances. As Marvel's mutant heroes struggle to establish a new status quo, Cyclops and Emma Frost go to extreme lengths to rebuild trust.
Originally introduced as a villain, Emma Frost has since pledged herself to protecting young mutants, joining and even leading the X-Men. Recently, she's partnered with Kitty Pryde to launch a new mutant school called Graymatter Lane. However, with Cyclops seeing this new institution as one big target, the former lovers need some help to overcome their animosity.
In response, Iceman and reality-warping mutant Ben Liu plunge the team into a Dungeons & Dragons-inspired alt-reality, insisting that a prophecy states that only "Summers and Frost" can break an ancient curse.
Emma Frost Gets a Fantasy Redesign in X-Men United
In the recent X-Men United #4 - from Eve L. Ewing, Tiago Palma, Brian Reber and Joe Sabino - Cyclops, Iceman, Rogue, Emma Frost and more are transported to a living gameworld - one which can only be saved by Emma Frost and Cyclops working together. Of course, the mission goes wrong, and the issue ends with the characters trapped in this strange world.
Emma appears in a wide-brimmed hat with feathers, a wide collar and puffy sleeves, a cape and all in her trademark white. She wields some hidden daggers and wears a lute on her back, suggesting she's some kind of bard in this gameworld, able to use her telepathic gifts to help and harm.
Emma has worn a lot of different costumes over the years - including her own Iron Man armor - but no X-Men fan expected the haute couture-obsessed power broker to engage in cosplay. However, with every other X-Men hero insisting she and Cyclops bury the hatchet, Emma reluctantly agrees to the game.
Is Cyclops and Emma Frost's Romance Back On?
Indeed, so far the mission may be going too well. After combating a monster together, Cyclops and Emma have a moment of connection where it seems like their former attraction may be back on the table.
In 2004, Emma Frost and Cyclops got together following a telepathic 'affair' behind Jean Grey's back. The two were a couple for years, breaking up following the AvX event, where Scott found out Emma had cheated on him with Namor due to the effects of the Phoenix Force eroding their inhibitions. Since then, they've been largely reluctant allies.
The comic opens with them bickering about Graymatter Lane, which Cyclops worries will get its students killed by collecting vulnerable mutants in one place. They grudgingly agree to civility, even as Rogue sighs, "Hard to believe those two used to be in love." However, working together seemingly reignites their spark, with Emma expressing gratitude that they're on the same team.
Currently, Cyclops' wife Jean Grey, aka the Phoenix, is on an Odyssey through space, having unlocked the ultimate version of her Phoenix powers. During the Krakoan Era, the pair were strongly implied to have an open relationship, which Marvel hasn't explicitly addressed in the last few years - is it possible that Cyclops and Emma Frost will reconnect while in a gameworld designed to bring them together?
X-Men's Emma Frost has a brand-new costume as the mutant heroes embark into a living gameworld designed to end her feud with Cyclops, but their adventure so far implies the mission may be working a little too well, potentially reigniting their relationship.
