Emily Blunt stuns in a strapless black and gold gown at American Institute for Stuttering Gala after revealing her childhood stutter became 'the making' of her

Emily Blunt looked incredible in a strapless black and gold gown at the American Institute for Stuttering (AIS) Gala in New York on Wednesday.

The actress, 43, is a longstanding patron of the annual gala, having voiced her own childhood experience with stuttering. 

Emily has proudly admitted in the past that her speech impediment became 'the making' of her and ultimately led her to an acting career. 

The Devil Wears Prada star made a glamorous appearance for the gala's 20th anniversary held at the Rainbow Room.

The AIS is a leading non-profit organisation that provides specialised and affordable speech therapy and support for children and adults who suffer with a stutter. 

Emily previously revealed that having a stutter felt like she had an 'imposter' living inside of her.

After developing her stutter at a young age, Emily admitted she sometimes still struggles to not have her words get 'stuck', particularly when feeling nervous or under pressure. 

Speaking at Variety's Power Of Women gala last year, she said: 'Certain words will get stuck, the phone is a bit of a nightmare... 

'Environments challenge me if I'm scared, or if I'm under pressure to persuade or convince, like, don't ever ask me to pitch you anything ever.'

'A stutter is like an imposter living in your body. Who doesn't pay rent. And completely and utterly misrepresents who you are as a person.'

She added in a separate interview: 'Stutterers are some of the most courageous people because it's such a minefield every time you open your mouth.

'One of the ways I could speak normally was if I did a silly voice or an accent. It actually gave me a fluency I wasn't otherwise capable of.

'It was the making of me, in many ways.'

Emily is married to her actor husband John Krasinski and shares daughters Hazel, 12, and Violet, 10. 

The Hollywood power couple have been wed since 2010. 

Emily has said that both her children are already interested in following in their parents' footsteps.

But The Devil Wears Prada star appears worried. 'My toes curl when people tell me, 'My daughter wants to be an actress.' I want to say, "Don't do it!"' she told Harper's Bazaar UK.

'Because it's a hard industry and it can be very disappointing,' she continued. 

'A lot of people tell you not to take things personally – but it's completely personal, especially when you're being judged on how you look. So you just have to endure that side of things.'

And she doesn't like how acting forces her to leave her home.

'Even though they're hardy, and they're used to this strange life, it's still rough on them when I have to go away,' she added. 

'There are cornerstones of the girls' day that I don't want to compromise on – like, will you wake me up, take me to school, pick me up and put me to bed? And I just want to be able to say, yes, yes, yes. It's such an exhale for me to be able to do that.'
