The 2025 Oscar nominations have finally arrived after much discussion about who the contenders will be, what precursors one should pay attention to, and delays due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles.
On this week’s Screen Talk, host Anne Thompson is joined by IndieWire Awards Editor Marcus Jones (filling in for co-host Ryan Lattanzio) to go through the full list of Academy Award nominees for feature length films, highlighting what some of the surprises were, as well as which films, actors, and artisans will win.
Though “Emilia Pérez” led with 13 Oscar nominations, breaking the record for the most nods an international feature has ever gotten, the pair detail why they are hesitant to declare Jacques Audiard’s Mexico-set musical, about a crime lord seeking redemption after her gender confirmation surgery, as the frontrunner for Best Picture.
Relatedly, the duo dive into the Best Documentary Feature race, which notably shut out all three Netflix titles on that were on the Oscar shortlist in favor of films like “No Other Land,” “Porcelain War,” and “Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat” — films that skillfully capture past and present global conflicts.
Finally, the hosts debate about the degree in which Academy voters enjoy other major Oscar contenders, like “Wicked,” “The Brutalist,” and “A Complete Unknown,” leading to a head-to-head about who will win Best Actor between past winner Adrien Brody and past nominee Timothée Chalamet.
